For me . This outlet www.gear4music.comYour order what you want , they send you a Text saying it's been dispatched, they also mail you tracking on the day of delivery the equally good UK Mail courior sends you a Text a few hours before delivery telling you they will be there within a certain time span which has always been an hour. Absolutly brilliant to use. Prices are very good too.

As you're talking about musical instruments Bax Shop is the place I've just used to buy my latest guitar. Lowest price around and trouble free shipping. One caveat, although their business address is the U.K. they actually ship from Holland. No problem, just takes a day or two longer. I've also bought a few things from Musikhaus Thomann in Germany. Same deal. Absolutely trouble free, better prices than the U.K. stores on a lot of things, and you can tick a box for email or text updates on your order for every step of it's journey. They probably have the best price on a Mellotron M4000D Rack too Anderton's Music in the U.K. was also good, as was Steven James Guitar & Amp a.k.a. North East Guitar & Amp Centre.

Nespresso (well you didn't say hifi related, although it is in a kind of way!)
I have regularly ordered coffee supplies late in the evening and had the package turn up first thing next morning.

Amazon. I have used them extensively and remain impressed at their virtually faultless service. Yes, they're big and could be seen as impersonal, but they exemplify a well thought through automated system that, for the most part, works extremely well.

I won't use them on principle, unless they sort out their UK tax commitments.

I recall several instances of people ordering gear from a Mr S. Beresford and receiving them on the same day.

I have just been *extremely* impressed with Crucial / Micron - I ordered my Mac Memory RAM upgrade yesterday at 1pm and I have just installed it the next morning!
They also have a handy system scanner that makes sure you buy compatible memory ... So far so good.

I recall several instances of people ordering gear from a Mr S. Beresford and receiving them on the same day. Thank you for mentioning it Chris. Unfortunately my good level of service, which has been in place for many years now, has now fallen behind with the times. I haven't got the facility to inform customers via Twitter etc. at exactly which exact second of the day their doorbell will ring. That's reason enough for not remembering my mail order business. I have considered delivery by drones by the way, but they have a bad reputation in Pakistan and many other countries. The customer and after care service appears to be non-existent once delivery has taken place.

Have to disagree with you on that one - they used to be excellent, but over the past year I've had numerous items arrive much later than their promised 'one day delivery' - in one case it was two weeks !

That story has done the rounds and reflects badly on the delivery company, not the supplier. More seriously, quoting the Daily Mail as if anything they write is factual is the worst kind of faux pas

Well, it wasn't intended to be a serious post. Whatever you have said, it doesn't alter the fact that CCTV captured these images. I also take stuff published by the Daily Mail with a pinch of salt, but this is a video of real time performance, unless of course you are so cynical to believe it was all set up and made up and if so, why would the Daily Mail open themselves to litigation by naming a delivery company?
I suffer from appalling delivery service when out of home, particularly, regardless of delivery instruction, valuable items left on the doorstep in full public stealable view or left soaking in the rain. In my experience, there is not a lot to choose between all the delivery companies, no doubt because they pay their deliverers per delivery and not on an hourly work standard. That encourages poor delivery standard and performance. Generally, if you are at home, it's never a problem.....if you are not, delivery can be very poor quality.

Unfortunately, the video that Greg refers to is not an uncommon incident, my Mother having had several similar incidents.
Many a mail order company's reputation has been tarnished by extremely bad courier performance.

The couriers don't help - I was due a delivery today (dpd) - ddin't arrive because they 'could not find the address'. That despite they've delivered to me many times in the past and I thought they were the most reliable couriers.

Any courier company's reputation is only as good as the efforts of the last link in the chain, ie the delivery driver.
Old adage, pay peanuts and get monkeys.
In my experience DPD drivers are at the lower end of the primate ladder.

In my experience DPD drivers are at the lower end of the primate ladder. The DPD drivers we get up here are usually pretty good in my experience, polite and as helpful as they need to be. and we get a text saying what hour they will be delivering the parcel. They have so far always been wishing that hour slot. I have had numerous problems in the last with City Link, though I guess that is no longer an issue.

DPD have been good for us, too. Our driver 'George' always turns up on time.
City Link deserved exactly what they got.
