Might be an idea to PM Steve at Electric beach. He offered the Frugel 3 as part of a AV set up with focus on SQ. He produces the minx speaker for side and rear duties....aint OBs but have a very similar sonic signature/let you match drivers.

Worth thinking about in-wall rear speakers, such as the KEF Uni-Q? With the exception of the section of wall above the internal door all walls are solid masonry. Hi Darren Maybe you could consider mounting the surround speakers in the ceiling firing down above the seating. I think the failing of most AV set-ups concerns cohesive integration of the sound field and having the ambient speakers too close so that you identify the source is a bigger problem than matching the drivers - although I agree with Tony, the centre and front L/R must be matched. As for OB's as surrounds; don't they need some space behind them?

As for OB's as surrounds; don't they need some space behind them? Hi Steve, Thanks for the input. Since Marin mentioned the Kef's I have been toying with the idea of ceiling mounting, my local dealer has just moved premises and installing Ci's is still on their to-do list, once they have them installed I'll check them out. I agree with what you're saying about the speakers being too close, this is the biggest problem I've created moving the room around but I do also feel matching the drivers makes a big difference to integration. I also agree about matching L/C/R this is how I was setup prior to the move but the fireplace prohibit's using 3 x 44's up front, which to be fair was a crazy look . I'm rolling on a "phantom" centre at the moment, it's alright, I do miss having a dedicated centre but can live with it for the short term. I was looking into OB's as space behind surround speakers even before the move, has always been my biggest issue. I was hoping using a 6"-8" FR OB would be the solution but it seems the consensus is no. I think I'm just trying to put too much into the room and would be far better working with the room instead of trying to fight it. I'm not too heart broken, the house comes with the job so I'll only be here for another year or so which gives me time to listen to a few pairs of speakers, I've never heard a pair of OB's so hopefully over the next 12 months I'll get the chance.

If you never heard OBs then do before you decide Where about are you based The two people I know with AV OB systems have a lot of space For me OBs are just a great way to get a high quality speaker without spending crazy money I primarly see them for music but as you know a few people use them as a AV set up too I do watch films through them from time to time Speak to Bob on the Hawthorne site. He really knows his stuff and has a amazing looking AV system

I live in Wrexham, North Wales. Lot's of space is something I'm lacking room is 5m x 5m, adequate for a pair of speakers but it would seem not big enough to go full range all the way around with window / door limitations. Yes, I've seen Bob's gallery photo's, amazing!

I do think space is limiting factor Plenty of room for a traditional OB set up but just seems to small for a AV set up to be done right The Fugual 3 are fantastic speakers and use a smaller Mark Audio driver than the ones I recommended for OBs

Some audio porn to tease... but if I understand correctly you want to build yourself Darren. May be food for thought anyway.
