Easily their second best album after "Next". Great cover, and true concept album and a bunch of great songs. Entwistle's finest hour too. Essential listening.

I've had an interesting day. I popped around to see my friend Colin (Toppsy on the forums - he of speaker building notoriety) and he wanted me to hear his vinyl setup following some tweaking of the phono amp and also some minor deck fettling, and unprompted by me he stuck Quadrophenia on.
It sounded a damn sight better than the CD I'd been listening to. The upshot is I've brought the record home with me and I'm going to give the album a proper listen again. only this time I'm looking forward to it. I have a feeling I might well be retracting my comments and changing my album score.

Just goes to show you how critical the mastering is in all formats.

I am playing Quadrophenia from vinyl - it's a first issue release. The deadwax has TML-M stamped in it - TML stands for The Mastering Lab which was one of the cutting houses back in the day, and the suffix of M stands for the master cutting lathe. The would have have been an S lathe and possibly an X lathe too - they were both slaves to the M.
I wish I'd had my hands on this when I first started listening - it's a world apart from the flat and lifeless affair I was listening to. I'm now able to appreciate this album for the first time, and now that I can actually engage with it I find it to be a bit of an undiscovered gem. I'll have to find me a decent copy of this, 'cos the CD version I had was truly awful.
Now it engages me I have to amend my previous low score. I have given it an 8. Previous comments are retracted.

I have a spare copy with a ratty sleeve. I don't know what sort of nick the discs are in but if they will scrub up okay, then you can have it Chris.
If you'd like it, that is.

No problem, I'll take a look at it tomorrow. My memory is notoriously crap, so if you don't hear from me about it by, say Tuesday, then feel free to badger the bejeezus out of me!

I played Tommy so much even my Dad knew the words , as much as I liked it Whos Next is on another level. Quadrophenia , its good , its very good but I feel Pete T tried a bit too hard with the "Rock Opera" concept , a fabulous film though.
