Hello! Just discovered this site and am excited to become a member! My name is Albert and I'm a classical, jazz, and vinyl enthusiast. I'm an academic nephrologist in Boston and thanks to two loving and very supportive parents, grew up in Chicago listening to and playing a lot of music. A few years ago I started a blog on classical vinyl collecting called Miles to Mozart (milestomozart.blogspot.com), which I'd invite all of you to check out if you're interested. I'm no professional expert by any means, just a passionate collector of music who wanted to share some of my thoughts about records I've owned. I look forward to participating in some of the discussions on this forum!

Hello Albert and welcome to TAS! Miles to Mozart is really great reading, thank you for that. I need to absorb much more of it, but what I've read so far has taught me a lot (and cost me a bit, too). Do tell us about the equipment you use for listening too, when you get a chance.
Has Boston calmed down now that the Big Dig is completed? The traffic there a few years ago was incredible, and not in a good way.

Hi Albert and welcome to TAS from me too, it's really great to have you here. I had to check just what it is that a nephrologist does, so I'm grateful to you for helping me to increase my knowledge! Your blog site looks great and I'm sure it will appeal to a good few members. Cheers

Hi Martin -- thank you for the welcome! I'm glad to hear that Miles to Mozart has been enjoyable to read ... I apologize for not updating it recently, but work has prevented me from putting in the time. Haha, I hope I haven't influenced too many high-ticket purchases. I'm still repairing the burnt hole in my wallet but hope that the insight I've picked up from my own successes and failures in collecting can help others from paying a lot of money for albums that have less than stellar musical or sound quality.
After selling off a bunch of unused equipment and lots of LPs, I finally settled on this system, most of which was purchased used:
VPI Aries 1 with JMW Memorial tonearm and Lyra Kleos cartridge Coincident Statement phono stage Coincident Frankenstein 300B monoblock power amps Von Schweikert VR2 speakers
After a bit of shifting in the last couple of years, I think this is what I'll be keeping for the long haul.
Boston traffic is still horrid. Nothing will ever change about that, I'm afraid. I'm originally from Chicago, where traffic was, sadly, also not exemplary.

Hi Albert, a warm welcome from me as well ... It's fabulous to have another classical vinyl collector on board ... I have only recently discovered your excellent blog, which I will delve into in more detail when time allows; there is much for me to enjoy there! There is fantastic value to be had in carefully chosen re-issues and also the so called 'budget' record labels - I make no apologies for having plenty of these in my collection! I'm not at all interested in buying an LP simply because it's rare - sound quality and performance are the only motivators for me. Looking forward to your contributions to TAS.

Thanks for the warm welcome, Jules. YES! I absolutely agree about the reissues! In many cases, the reissues can come very close (if not nearly identical) to the originals and are much more affordable. I am very much in favor of these!

Good day to you Sir! Welcome to the forum.
I'm not the biggest classical/vinyl fan but if you are interested I can beam you pictures of a huge classical vinyl section from my local charity shop. Lots of high quality recordings there very cheap. Just let me know if you are interested!
All the best.

Wow - that is incredibly generous of you! Thank you very much! Pictures would be very welcome, though I don't want to trouble you and I'm not sure how I'd get a hold of those records ...

I'll correct you Mike! Yes we do have one or two members from the USA. The one in particular that I remember is someone who comes from Minneapolis.

Hello Col! I wonder if I have run into any of your friends before. To be honest, I know only a few hifi nerds here, mostly those who own their own hifi shops. Would be great to meet some more!

hi Adam, welcome. i spend half my life in Boston since i own a couple of companies based close to the city. whereabouts do you live?
Boston drivers: you are right: some of the most aggressive drivers anywhere, which explains why car insurance is so expensive in Mass.
Which dealers do you use? best seems to be Alan Goodwin ocer in waltham who is always very helpful. great demo facilities although his current addiction to Magico speakers doesnt impress.

How nice to meet another Bostonian! Where did you live? We live in Brookline, right around Washington Square. I have been to Goodwin´s, The Audio Lab, and Q Audio, all of which have had pretty good service. There are several great record shops in Boston, too!
