I have never really felt the urge to explore 'Jazz' in any kind of depth, but having bought a quite wonderful Dave Brubeck vinyl 'hits' compiliation I feel that now is the time to start.
I know there are a few TAS jazz afficionados, so I would appreciate it if you could make some equally well recorded vinyl recommendations along the same kind of musical lines as Brubeck, and then I can start to explore other areas of the genre.
Thanking you muchly in advance ...

I assume you have Miles Davis Kind of Blue must have in any Jazz collection, for recording quality try and find Jazz at the Pawnshop, for something a little different try Herbie Hancock Head Hunters.

Trouble is, there's no-one quite like Brubeck! I reckon we could point you to all sorts of goodies though Jules.

There are so many Jazz albums to explore A Kind of Blue is a classic If you have spotify I add some links for you to explore I have started a Collaborative Playlist, used to do these on other forums. The ide is you put 1 track only from any Instrumental Jazz Album lets see if we can not all discover some new material. We could start a seperate Jazz Vocals list if it goes well TAS Jazz Spotify Playlist.

You could do very, very much worse than to get this box for yourself - it's a fantastic starter collection of incredible jazz classics and, at £35 for 25 albums, it's an utter bargain to boot. Here are the albums. The ones in bold would be the stand out 'must-have' albums for me. 1. Louis Armstrong - Plays W.C. Handy: Original Jazz Classics 2. Sarah Vaughan - Sarah Vaughan In Hi-Fi 3. Art Blakey - The Jazz Messengers4. Billie Holiday - Lady In Satin 5. Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue6. Dave Brubeck Quartet - TIME OUT
7. Duke Ellingtont meets Count Basie [1999 Remaster]8. Helen_Merrill & Piero Umiliani Orchestra - Parole E Musica 9. Charlie Mingus - Tijuana Moods10. Chet Baker - Chet Is Back!
11. Thelonious Monk - Monk's Dream
12. Sonny Rollins - Sonny meets Hawk!13. Martial Solal - Newport '63 14. Paul Desmond & Gerry Mulligan - Two of a Mind 15. Benny Goodman Quartet - Together Again 16. George Benson & Quartet - It's Uptown 17. Nina Simone - Sings the Blues
18. Art Tatum - Piano Starts Here
19. Erroll Garner - Concert by the Sea + Seattle 1963 20. Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters 21. Stan Getz - The Best Of Two Worlds 22. Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius 23. Weather Report - Heavy Weather 24. Wynton Marsalis - Marsalis Standard Time 25. Charlie Parker, Monty Alexander, Ray Brown, John Guerin - Bird

Trouble is, there's no-one quite like Brubeck! I reckon we could point you to all sorts of goodies though Jules. Thanks very much to all for suggestions! I'm pretty open minded but am quick to decide what I like and what I don't ... I will start with 'A kind of blue' which I've never heard. In fact the only jazz-ish lp I owned before a couple of weeks ago is a lovely Dianne Reeves lp that I bought way back in '87; I was listening to quite a lot of 'soul' at the time. I do have Spotify, just rarely use it but will be useful to helping me to decide what I want to acquire on vinyl. The TAS jazz playlist sounds like good fun!

One band you might like Jules, that perhaps others might not recommend, is the Modern Jazz Quartet. It's a bit like a cross between Brubeck and chamber music. However, a lot of folks don't go for vibraphone in too big a way. My recommendation for their best album would be this one:
MJQ - 'Fontessa'

Since Brubeck was a pianist, you might consider two excellent piano albums:
The Oscar Peterson Trio - 'Night Train'
Erroll Garner - 'Concert by the Sea'

Ron is the man to recommend good drummers albums, I'm sure, but my favourites are almost anything with Art Blakey on it....
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - 'Moanin' '
....and some slightly more modern (and British) fare:
Tommy Chase - 'Groove Merchant'
It's rather frenetic but always tuneful......and, as I have mentioned before about it, it swings like a bastard! This one could make a corpse tap it's feet!

Listening and very much enjoying 'Kind of Blue'. Amazing to think this is from 1959 - it's completely timeless to me ...

Good idea John, it's based on a Rodrigo classical theme that I am sure, Jules will know well.

Oscar Peterson gets my vote for introductory jazz. Try Oscar Peterson - We Get Requests.
If you like female voice, try some of the more jazzy Diana Krall albums such as Stepping Out.

And this bloody thread crashed and locked my Android. Just this thread - not the forum as a whole Anyway - bit surprised nobody has mentioned "FourPlay" yet - bit funky maybe, but hugely accomplished And I am a big fan of Karen Sharp - who I've heard live with her quartet www.triorecords.co.uk/KAREN_SHARP_SPIRIT.html
