Specific recommendations for particular pieces will come shortly, I'm sure. In the meantime, he might like to think about this - my daughter plays the Cello and a few years ago we got her a slightly differently packaged (read: older) version of this 6 CD set, which is an utter bargain. Each disc is themed by period and some of the tracks are highlights from longer pieces but it might make a good launching point for further exploration.

Well the most obvious place to start is the Elgar Cello Concerto played by Jacqueline du Pre with Sir John Barbirolli on EMI.
My particular favourite however, is the sublime Dvorak Cello Concerto. There are a few decent recordings - I have the Maurice Gendron, you can also look out for the Rostropovich and Tortelier recordings. None of these will dissapoint.
Also worth considering is the Tortelier recording of the Walton concerto.

And whilst I’m about it, whilst not solo cello, absolutely essential in my opinion is the Quartetto Italiano playing the Debussy and Ravel string quartets. It’s on Philips, SAL3643 on vinyl. Cd is available too …
Lots of gorgeous soaring cello work in both of these …
