I tramp the Heather every Sunday, with my twa dug's, in my bare feet, in search of the Haggis.... Tiz best that way as Haggi have great hearing, and stealth is best. Its been a poor season thus far though, plenty blisters but only twa Haggi..!!

......I liked wearing very thin socks underneath my walking socks for a blister-free experience. :) The theory is good - it's what I do too. We'll be in Southern Utah and Colorado in the summer though, so no big thick woolies for me!

Pubs in England are yards apart not miles like the highlands.

They're even further apart than that in Utah!

Pubs in England are yards apart not miles like the highlands. Just one of the reasons Scotland's better.

Thinking about what a cycling aficionado told me. Cycling shoes are only made of synthetic now. Will that transfer to all 'designed for purpose' footwear like this ?

Hmm, I don't know Mike - there are a lot of walking boots with substantial amounts of man made stuff in the uppers but there are still plenty with all leather uppers.

Think it was inferred the synthetics had many advantages over leather An of course they can charge more if there is unobtanium in there

I went to Blacks this evening and bought a very nice pair of walking/hiking boots. Merrell Moab Mid Leather Gore-Tex, very comfortable but robust and will last me a good number of years. The assistant was knowledgeable and helpful, took the time to ask me what I was going to use them for and what I needed from them and directed me to a useful shortlist.

Nice! I tried a few pairs a long time ago but was never able to find a pair of Merrell boots that were wide enough for my plates o' meat.

Funnily enough, Moab is one of the places I'll be taking my new boots this summer.

Hopefully you all know how to properly polish and bull your boots? Assume this is for leather.... None of my shoes have any leather

Chris, I followed your example and went to Cotswold Outdoors to try and get some insoles. I was glad I did - the dude there told me I didn't need the expensive ones and so I walked out with something decent for just a tenner...

Excellent! That kind of confirms what I thought and that they seem to actually care about their customer requirements.
