....It does! It does! It works! Got a stepdown transformer and tried it. The first disc I tried was a Hollies Greatest Hits. Played, but some skipping at the start of some tracks. Whizzed back and for and tried a few other discs. Put the The Hollies back on and it tracked ok. Even plays Sarah McLachlan's "Mirrorball". And, CD-Rs - with a struggle.

Yay! Excellent work, saving another machine from the scrap heap.

Recently I acquired "The Best Sounding Amplifier In The World". Oh yes... Well, why settle for second or third best? According to Practical HiFi 40+ years ago it was! And that's good enough for me! What is it? Nothing less than the Monster Mission 771/2 pre/power combination. The preamp has some pretty unusual features with switchable bandwidth, AC/DC coupling, switchable gain, individual balance control and speaker switching. There's also R&C loading on the phono inputs. Veritable rat's nest of wiring inside, and cobwebs. Has me wondering what it's crosstalk figures might be as there's no shielded cable, other than that for the phono input. www.stancurtis.com/Mission.htmThe power amp weighs a ton. More than any of the valve amplifiers I have. I had to assist the delivery driver with it. Luckily, the box restrained both items. They're both constructed from thick aluminium plate. Built as separate mono units, and deliver 160W into 8R and 250W into 4R. No possibility of using any fancy fuses internally, as it uses a contact breaker. When launched at the Harrogate Show, it used a 3 speaker wire arrangement to overcome speaker cable effects. Effectively extending feedback outside the amplifier. No one else seems to have ever considered this other than DNM. Tell a lie, not sure if it was Hitachi or not that brought out a 4 wire configuration in the 80s called Sigma Drive, I think. Anyway, when production got underway Mission decided to adopt the standard 2 wire connection, so as not to confuse the buyer. Back then they cost £1500 which equates to £8,200 now, apparently. and only 250 units were made. And how much did I pay for this marvel of engineering? Well, due to their remarkable condition and not working, it was for the princely sum of £300, reduced from £400! A bargain!

But how does it sound??

Do you have circuit diagrams to help you troubleshoot them?

Give over man Jules. They both want rebuilding. The power amp's still got bubble wrap on where I staggered with it when I got it out the box.
No Martin. Years ago I had an odd exchange of emails with Stan The Man. He was going to update his site with data for his classic designs, but still has yet to do so. His CD1 went for £1100 on eBay a few days ago, despite not working.

Thanks Jules. Made a start with the back panel. The main problem will be front and rear graphics for the preamp. Not sure how I'll get them done. Photos aren't the best.

Thanks Paul. Decades ago, when I had the enthusiasm to make stuff, I used to use it, and panel transfers. Problem being, they weren't very durable. Sealing them with a coat of lacquer helped, but then you had that finish.

Letraset and a matt lacquer finish can look really professional. I did that once, restoring a friend's amp.

I never used to be totally happy with my efforts. The spacing of something would be a tad out. Or something would be slightly off centre.

Thanks Paul. I'll have a ferret about. Didn't notice a missing sub-panel staring me in the face. Bastard! The other channel's is there - but I think it's potted. Bastard!

Ouch! Did you manage to get circuit diagrams? Do they give the internal structure of that module?
The only other recourse would be to find another similar PCB with perhaps only one channel working.

I've enquired with Stan The Man. Don't know if he still bothers responding to his site. All the other 5 sub-assemblies are potted. And they seem quite complex. Couldn't find anything when I searched. Pity.
