Ah, but who is the arbiter of good music? The listener of course, which is all that matters - Gordon's answer is spot on really, if a tad literal I do feel some sympathy for those on a seemingly endless quest, OK if you enjoy that journey, but so many people get wound up in knots when perhaps they would be better off not pursuing this 'hobby' as it's often called. I don't understand the mindset of music being considered a hobby. Tinkering with Hi-Fi is maybe a hobby, but music . . . never in my book. Off to see The Unthanks tonight in Cardiff, can't wait, the new album is superb, so the Hi-Fi can have a night off.

I was jesting about the music. We bang on about it being personal often enough!
We're off to see the LSO playing Duruflé's Requiem at the Barbican on Sunday. Equally can't wait, the last time we heard the Duruflé live was one of the musical moments of my life.

We're all doomed!
Audio taste - funny how folks differ.
On a post-Brizzle Show thread on the Wigwam, one guy with a £super£duper setup said he simply didn't hear the point of the system with the Eclipse speakers in, while for me it was easily best at show! Just shows that we listen for different things, probably with different music as the arbiter. It's all personal.

We are all doomed anyway My darling wife surprised me today. We were listening to the little JVC linear tracker and she said that it sounded just as good as all the expensive stuff and, in spite of having ears that would shame the average bat, she couldn't really hear much difference between any of the six record players we have set up. I hang onto that 'much'. There is no doubt the subtleties are there and that seems to be what we are after. If I had to, I could live with any of the systems we have. I am having to suffer at the mo as one of the Quads has developed a buzz on a bass panel so they are resting until I can get round to having it fixed (probably a new panel from Holland at £210) This is still where the major sound differences are to me. Speakers have THE major effect on the sound of a system. Good as my big banger home builds are, the Quads they ain't.
