THANKS JOHN Not got it yet [hopefully tomorrow!] but its a Plastidip product, basically liquid rubber that remains supple/flexible when dry. I'll post up the details if it works Plan is to give the cone's a thin coat all over & then increase the thickness around the voice coil until it "sounds right" - Not very technical I'm afraid, but fun !

Be VERY careful you don't get any down that magnetic gap!

How are you applying the doping James . Brush ( do you need a special one ) or are you spraying it on ?

Be VERY careful you don't get any down that magnetic gap! Don't worry, it'll be well sealed prior to application

How are you applying the doping James . Brush ( do you need a special one ) or are you spraying it on ? Not sure yet Brian, I'll have to play with the stuff to see how feels... I'm not keen on the idea of brush strokes so will try to avoid that if possible but yes the liquid rubber comes in a pot with an applicator brush - Its like applying black honey by the looks of it.

Excuse the poor picture quality I was really having to "haul ass" as the gloop starts to dry after 5 minutes. Bare drivers with foam "bungs" in place to prevent any gloop finding its way into the voice coil gap. First coat, I used the included applicator brush in the end... After experimenting with different things such as credit cards and sponges it just works best, not the prettiest finish but definitely the most even coverage. Ready for the first thick coat around the centre of the cone, I shimmed it to prevent any finding its way where I didn't want it & also to provide a barrier for the compound to build up on. After applying this I left them to dry before having a listen sans inductors... Very interesting ! It sounded pretty good but still too much going on up top - It was congested sounding so I added another thick coat around the centre which seems to have done the trick. Finito: In hindsight I would have done them one driver at a time rather than both together, As it was the process of application/dry/listen/remove/application/listen gets quite laborious.

I may have missed this James, but what SQ were you trying to alter?

I may have missed this James, but what SQ were you trying to alter? Nothing & everything, simultaneously. Its more for a laugh than anything, as stated in the OP I've always respected Joe Akroyd's take on what makes a speaker good or in other words an engaging listen [neutrality is not the goal!] Must have been 12 months ago or so I noticed "the doc" of HFS describing how he's continued these fundamental ideas & developed them further using different methods/materials, other members were giving it a bash DIY and reporting good results so I thought I'd give it a go too... The mods pretty much fly in the face of accepted speaker design wisdom which makes it all the more naughty & exciting

Yes, I thought making the cones heavy and damped may give you a 'BBC sound', lacking in detail and dynamics.

Common sense would dictate so but the outcome is quite the opposite, they sound extremely dynamic... "live", "thwack", "like a drum skin" are words that spring to mind. Unless heard for yourself its hard to wrap your head around.
