Gosh, two pairs of DCMs! If you like the scale of these you may well like some of the big Mirage speakers like my M3si - don't know if you've ever had the pleasure? How do you find the imaging on the Windows? I think iI will need to spend a bit more time with positioning the Windows. Today the image was huge but not really that focused. The Time Frames were easier to site and imaged better. My Spicas are still the best sound staging speakers I have heard but they could never compete with the scale and weight of the DCMs. Those Mirages look beautiful. Not something you see come up for sale that often either. PJ: I think I will really like the SBLs but I've had about half a dozen pairs in the past so my excitement for the DCMs is much higher. The SBLs will likely end up with my mate once I've got them completed. The attraction for me was the Malcolm Steward provenance. He is someone who was highly influential in my early hifi years. Now if I could only get one of Jimmy Hughes' KSA50s, that would be a dream come true!

Interesting - Windows big soundstage / Frames better imaging. I've heard both Windows and Frames models but never in any comparable way and I'd always thought that what you've found might be the case. However, I'm surprised that the Frames were easier to site. Good to know!

I've never heard a Naim speaker that I like.
Jimmy Hughes' Impulse speakers would be fun to try. The Krell too, but I don't need additional room heating.

I've tried to be a bit more disciplined lately, but a few things have slipped in and out without more than a few hours playtime. A mint and serviced MF A1 left today after about an hour's play. I used to love them, but today it just doesn't do anything for me. I had a lovely pair of IBLs that looked so gorgeous but again I've moved on. They were so far away from the sound I like these days, it was very surprising.

I also mentioned the Arcam Two Plus speakers that I really shouldn't have bought. Well, I'm enjoying them a lot thanks to the Jimmy Highes mods. In fact I've taken the spirit of his ideas a bit further. Jimmy was notorious for firing his Impulse horns the "wrong" way round. I've always liked upward firing speakers, so today the Arcams have been "re-directed" and they sound so much better it's laughable. not the nicest look I've had, but it's inspiring me to build a DIY pair of speakers that fire upwards but look more conventional.

Interesting and I salute your experimentation. I'm afraid that IBLs, SBLs and DBLs have never done anything for me, but it's good to at least reconfirm my memory of them. On the other hand, I have a very soft spot for JBLs (see what I did there) and can find good in nearly every model I've ever heard.

Have you ever tried the lesser models, Martin? Things like L20T or TLX range? My only JBL experience is TLX3s in the 80s, but they weren't being used with anything decent, so it was hard to know what to make of them.

I used to have a pair of L-100T, the big floorstanders in the range. My mate has them now and we re-foamed the bass drivers recently. Some 30 years later, they still do a lot right and the Ti tweeter is a good 'un.

I'd like to hear some one day. I'm sure some will cross my path, although they may well find themselves staring at the ceiling. Incidentally the upward firing Arcam Two Plus speakers are still a true revelation. A mate visited today and the surprise on his face when he heard them was a real picture. they will never face forward again, that's for sure.

I love off-the-wall solutions despite remembering raising my eyebrows at Jimmy Hughes at the time.

I'm sure some people will think we are both mad, but I feel that's their loss. The difference isn't small and it's very hard to go back. I feel the small minority of speaker designers who have incorporated some form of upward firing have got it right and the rest have simply gone with the herd. You may know better than me, but was Roy Allison the first to experiment with an upward firing bass unit? Maybe Sonab?

I was going to ask if you had tried any Sonab speakers?

There were quite a few upward / downward firing omnidirectional speakers in the late 50s, early 60s. Most had reflctor cones but a few did not. I like the h/k Citation 13 from the early 70s, which did not.

Hey hey, they'd look great on a set of Queen Anne legs!
