I very nearly bought another Krell KSA50 Do it, you know you want to!
But seriously, it would be quite a refurbishment exercise (I seem to remember SQ doing either a KSA-50 or 80) and so satisfying at the end.

I think these have Andrew's name on them!

Oh yes I saw those too I think they are the actual pair I could have had a couple of years ago. Price is more than fair too IMO.

Here's a pic of the Copland:

And the Diamonds: I won't pretend they aren't limited but they are fun and they don't do a lot wrong. Hard to imagine achieving much for from a speaker at this size and price:

I nearly bought that Copland CD player many years ago.

It's certainly a lively thing. Nothing like their amps IMO. I guess they might balance each other out if paired together. Whilst I liked both, I think the CD player is more my thing than the amp I had (CSA14).

There's something about Scandinavian amps. I found the Advantage amps to be flat and lifeless, too.

Another new addition. Very nicely made and finished but it doesn't beat the Copland.

Been a bit quiet lately due to house move/renovation but I seem to be gathering bits again. I am still renovating (new kitchen arrives Sat and I am hopefully flooring the loft Thurs/Fri) but will try to get some pics up. Here's what's accumulated: Beresford Caiman, Sugden A21a, Royd Minstrels (a second pair for refurb), Linn Kans (my 44th pair... I kid you not) and my old Exposure 3 and 4 coming back to me again. I have high bids on another couple of items but I won't tempt fate by saying more right now.
It will be interesting to try these alongside my existing kit in the new room. Past experience has taught me that the room can and will turn everything on its head. My first listen yesterday wasn't great. The room sounded dull and boomy. Better tonight with speaker placement change, reducing back wall reflection and opening the curtains across the bay window. Might be a week or so before I get much time, because I ripped the old kitchen out and need to get the new one in ASAP.

Gosh 44 pairs. You must like them quite a bit then! I'm afraid that almost every time I have heard a system with them in, I have come away thinking: "Kan? No, they Kan't quite".

My first pair were truly wonderful. None since have matched them but some have come closer than others. The attraction this time is the new listening room. Not a single pair worked well in my last one. I reached the stage where I thought I'd outgrown them. That may still be the case but it will be fun finding out

Well, I wish you luck with it. Are you often able to recapture past magic Andrew, or do you find yourself chasing shadows a lot? You must have some success, I'm sure, or you'd have given up with the box swapping years ago.

That's a really good question. Exposure never disappoints and I always enjoy Snell speakers and Roksan decks, but there's little else that's consistent. When I revisit something in a new home and system, I can rarely find any trace of the sound I recalled. It makes me very doubtful when others are so dogmatic on their opinions. If I can't repeat my own experiences consistently, then how can others expect their experiences and tastes to work the same for a different pair of ears in an unknown system and room? That's not to say advice is pointless. Just that it's not always universally applicable.

Definitive statements are so rarely definitive in the audio game, aren't they? I've often said that I think there actually very few truly bad bits of kit, just bad combinations. Yet to hear some people speak, it's easy to see how you might think it is all so cut and dried.

I try to remember that the room makes the biggest difference. Move house and all bets are off. You may as well reset all your expectations and start again.

There's something about Scandinavian amps. I found the Advantage amps to be flat and lifeless, too. I almost forgot I had a Advantage preamp in my system not the worst pre amp I ever had but did not keep it for too long

A friend had one (sold by John Jeffries, who seemed to love them) and I started calling it Disadvantage. He wasn't so amused.

The best mid 80's 'Linn Kans' are actually Naim IBL's! same balance, but not quacky due to the paper cone.
KEF were renowned for never having consistency on their B110 bass-mid drivers and although Linn made the speakers well (most of the time), the differences were due to KEF..

That could explain LS3/5a variations.
