I like the idea of the separate sections with spikes. It gives you the flexibility of being able to use them as individual parts, say a two shelf and a single shelf should your needs change. With 40mm square legs, the whole thing will be perfectly solid once the gear is in place.

I hadn't thought of it like that Gordon, although it does also give you the flexibility to add a new tier or take one out, depending on the gear being used

Hi Peter, The carpenter I had in mind unexpectantly popped round tonight just as I was sitting down to dinner, he conveniently wanted to give me an invoice, what joy :-) Could he not have waited till Monday ! Anyway he is a good guy so I let him off. I mentioned your hifi rack and he was well up for it. When he sends me his email address I'll get your designs off to him.

As long as the figures add up James, I'm really looking forward to realising this project I may have to make a few changes to the upright dimensions as I haven't taken into account the dimensions of the ebony or rosewood spikes and shoes I plan to use... but we can cross that bridge later...

It seems like ages since I started this thread, but today, I finally took delivery of the bespoke rack I'd always wanted, but at a fraction of the cost of similar racks command. After extensive email discussion, I had hoped that James/Sovereign was going to provide the services to built it, but unfortunately, as a result of his workload etc, I ended up dealing with Alistair at Woodendal. The finished rack was based around his oak AV rack and built with the addition of rosewood spikes/shoes and stainless steel floor spikes which I sourced myself from eBay. The completed racks dimensions are 1040mm wide by 430mm deep with slightly inset legs. The shelf heights are as follows: Under bottom shelf - 100mm First shelf - 180mm Top shelf - 160mm It was then finished with several coats of Danish oil. The finished cost was £400 delivered. The first two images show the rack in situ, prior to the addition of equipment. ...and here she is fully loaded: As well as James being able to produce bespoke racks of this type, Alistair can be contacted via his website www.woodendal.com and although I'm not on any commission etc (honest guv) please just mention that you heard about his services from me via TAS Incidentally, the oak speaker stands seen in the same images were sourced from eBay seller Rich @ custom-av-furniture and the top plate was sized specifically for the JBL4311's. Cheers Pete

Many thanks James As an aside, I forgot to mention in my previous post that the heavyweight oak speaker stands were sourced from Custom-AV-Furniture's eBay portal, which can be found via the link below: www.ebay.co.uk/usr/custom-av-furniture

What a nice, clean look! It really matters to me that I can live comfortably in my room with my hifi. Yours is a pleasure to see, so thanks for sharing.

It's great that the new rack and speaker stands match, very nice and at a bargain price.

Thanks Martin... I had kittens when I looked at the cost of a well known brand of rack, not too dissimilar from what I had made. So just under £600 for both is superb value. The fact that they almost match with their finishes is a Brucie bonus though

What rack were you using before, have you noticed a difference in sound to the Hifi?

I was using a SoundStyle rack and to be honest James, having only had the new rack arrive today, its far too soon for me too say if there is any noticeable differences...
