Ok, it is 24/192 capable. an SSD drive can be fitted. but can it be controlled with a tablet ( like squeezebox with IPeng or Squeezepad) ? how would it structure it's music library / use tags ? can a tablet be used to access the configuration side of things ? and yes, looks like it has a digital output, but possibly a low quality one (no SPDIF or optical ?) As for getting FLAC files onto it, I'm thinking the way forward (albeit a long winded one) would be to rip a CD to my IMac, convert the .wav files to FLAC using XLD or similar, dump the output on a memory stick, then whack that into the Slice via its USB socket Not sure to what extent XLD automatically includes Tags and album art etc. So many questions! I have asked many of these of the designers but no reply as yet.

I assume it has an Ethernet connection? If so, just connect it up to your home network. You can then either load the internal HD with your Mac or stream from a NAS.

The Slice will announce itself on the network as a DLNA server. You should be able to point rips directly at it so long as you get the network addressing correct. You should also be able to put files onto the Slice by dragging and dropping.

Looks a nice bit of kit Greg, it's a great thing that Rasberry Pi is taking off, More power to 'em!
be interesting if you can use it as a DNLA renderer, and set it up as a Zone in Jriver.... use Jriver interface to drive it or your IOS/Android app to control it.

Yes, Gary, I believe it is going to be a nice user friendly bit of kit suitable for me because of my general 'IT ignorance' which was bluntly exposed by Chris in another place who then went to yet another place and posted a bit of a guilt message about that so called 'cruel to be kind' bluntness he uses at times Whilst I don't deny my ignorance, the kind thing to do would be to help my education rather than bluntly criticise. There you go and sorry, gone off topic. My understanding is it is completely compatible with jriver and as such all files can be dragged and dropped from another storage system and it automatically uploads all the artwork and file notes. Certainly I will be able to use an app on either my iPad or iPhone to control it. I am still awaiting it's arrival but in anticipation, I have used jriver to rip my CD library onto an external HD linked to my PC, and expecting the Slice internal DAC to be little more than a basic functioning item, I have invested in a Beresford Caiman MkII. Thereafter, I anticipate my library will expand using streamed downloads. I may change the storage to an SSD in the future.

Might be better investing in a NAS Greg, to allow your music collection to grow. You are limited to one hard drive inside the box.

Hi Ali,
I don't really understand why I need to do that and in anycase (being ignorant) I don't understand the benefits of a NAS system.
My Slice HD is 2Tg so plenty of storage. In terms of back up, I can download files to my other PC external HD. I know you don't give advice without good reason so any explanation would be helpful.
Thanks mate.

2T will store quite a lot of music. Make sure you back up your music

Yep 2T is a lot. But, you need to back it up somewhere, and sometime down the road you will run out of space. I like the Drobo I use, it automatically shares the files between four hard drives, so I can lose a drive with no loss of data.

Also, for belt and braces, you should really have a third storage option elsewhere, in case ( God forbid) you have a house fire or flood or the like.

Had a look at the product video Greg, cant argue with the value and the flexibility on offer. A lot of folks are gunning up for the "new squeezebox" and this is a fair stab at it. You can always add a USB external hard drive on when you run out of room if you fill the hard drive up. Good to see it plays FLAC format, accept no substitute! :-) If I had one I'd be looking to use it in conjunction with Jriver and use it purely as a media renderer (player) and Jriver "Client" through the Beresford Dac into your system. I'd use the Jriver interface on the big telly to control it, setting it up as a Jriver "Zone", or use the "Jriver link" to use Jremote control app to browse and play my muusic. Easy done Greg, sure all us here will help out if we can.
