Upping all the bands for insensitive phones isn't going to work if the phone's headphone analogue out simply can't supply the juice, Jerry. Just sayin'. It gets louder just fine. It's a gain not a power limitation. That's the difference between actual experience and hypothesising, Justin. Just sayin' But yes, it could be an issue depending on the phone, the cans, and the recording.

The Insight Lander has recently officially had its 2 year mission life extended. One anticipated problem is causing concern as dust builds up on its deliberately oversized solar energy panels. With previous rovers Martian dust devils had helped clear some dust off of their panels, and it had been expected that the same thing would happen with Insight. But it's been unlucky so far, with several swirling dust devils being observed to pass by but none close enough to have a cleaning effect. Power output from the panels is now down to 27% of maximum due to dust cover and the Lander is having some of its activities curtailed for the Martian winter, when solar irradiance is reduced, to conserve power. phys.org/news/2021-02-insight-winter-dusty-mars.html?utm_source=nwletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=daily-nwletter

Glazunov symphonies 2,5 & 4i get my vote as being quite special.

... Numero 1 I can manage without. On 4i now, sumptuously lovely. I hope the rest lives up to the 1st mvt.

I can take or leave Glazunov symphonies 3 and 9, but the 2nd is a pippin. #1 next.

^ Seriously good opening tracks to each of the 2 scenes, especially the first - they'll encourage me to explore his symphonies - but I'd classify the rest as more or less balletic drivel.
It's a bit like film music, every couple of minutes you get jerked to the next scene and it's all change. I'm sure it makes sense when watching the ballet (or film) but fairly bloody useless standalone.
... And there's a lot of annoying cutesy music as well.

Possibly. Must admit I usually give ballet scores a wide berth.
I'll have a listen to the one you linked to.

OK, thanks u211 and Mr whippy.
My Huawei PSmart phone has a very good 10 band equaliser that I use all the time for direct headphone connection. It's quite surprising how different my preferred EQs are for different headphones.
{A cunning trick for increasing gain into insensitive headphones is to whap all the eq bands up to max - that gets an extra 10 dB!}
But it only works when headphones are connected and doesn't have a LR balance control. I wouldn't mind finer volume control gradations than the phone gives, either.
But it looks like I'll have to be happy with what I've already got!

As for classical, almost all my listening is by dead composers so that doesn't tally, either. ... It might tie in with when you first heard them. Personally, while I've not really thought about it, my immediate reaction is the same as yours, Martin. A thread on Desert Island Discs might well be interesting, and would likely introduce each of us to new music to investigate as well - always a good thing!

Actually, that would make an interesting thread: 'my desert island discs'. ...."and when I first heard them" would provide interesting information relevant to this particular thread!

I've a MyST 1866 R-2R DAC and it does have a naturalness to it that is distinctive and just sounds 'right' without being especially great in any particular way.
I've previously had an early Metrum ladder DAC and that didn't seem particularly special. So the tech isn't a magic bullet.

Yes, I agree, it is an exceptional recording. The music is quite enjoyable as well!
