Martin,
Would you not consider ripping CDs to FLACs or similar for albums which are not available via streaming?

The Raspberry Pi runs "headless", there is no need for screen, mouse or keyboard. From a PC you can control it from a webpage. You are likely to be familiar with this approach for operating your router or similar
You have the normal music controls... play, pause, next track, volume etc. There are facilities for browsing or searching your music library or streaming service
On a phone or tablet, you can still use the web page approach, but there is also a dedicated app which is a more concise way to achieve the same thing
In the next few days, I am more than happy to answer in more details since I have just started my school holiday

Last summer, I bought an echo dot (the small one with barely a speaker) and a 3rd party speaker/rechargeable battery base, (This makes the sound almost the same as the full sized echo and adds portability). I was slow coming to voice control.
I find the generic shopping list really useful.... The key is that you tend to think of buying stuff when you are either cooking, cleaning or in the shower. There is no need for dry/clean hands, just instantly shout at Alexa. When you are in the shop, the list is on my phone. This has really improved the accuracy of my shopping each week and allowed me to keep a smaller stock of things in reserve without running out.
For similar reasons, when I am cleaning or cooking, I find voice control of music quite useful. Do not underestimate the ability to navigate straight to a track deep within a hierarchy of artists and albums. Currently, this is mostly driving spotify and Amazon music. I have had some success with getting it to operate spotify connect running on my Pi which in turn feeds my "main" system here (recall I am a nomad).
Cheers

Thanks Slinger, This is interesting, I like the idea of having control over colour temp... Daylight ones are good for actually seeing stuff, but are pretty brutal for just relaxing in the evening. I like the idea of being able to track what natural light actual does which should monkey less with sleep cycles

I tend to run the volumio app either/or/and the spotify app across my phone, el-cheapo fire tablet and PC. I have even had some success in using voice via Alexa to control Spotify playing on the Raspberry Pi. I tend to operate whichever one is nearest at the time.
In this respect, it all works a lot like Sonos did... (I dabbled with this a few years back... I like the ease of use across rooms/platforms very much)

I have previously used a similar thing to debug the charging of my previous phones... It was always something of a black art to get them to recharge at their fastest rate... experimented with all manner of high current chargers and heavy gauge power only USB leads.
In contrast. my OnePlus5 is coming up for its second birthday and if used with their own chargers (home and car) it really does do what it says on the tin and charge inline with the marketing blurb, which is something like 80% charge in 30mins

FYI there is a new version of Spotify connect plugin dated 26th March with the following change log entry : March 26th 2019
At this time, I personally see no reason to change to it apart from possibly a request from the developers for debug logs if they are assisting with resolving problems Cheers Sean

Martin,
You beat me to it....
I was about to say that under the "plugins" section, for the first time, there was now an "upgrade" button next to "details" and "uninstall"..... First time that I have seen this
Clicking this upgraded it to 0.9.1 so I am now less confused
Cheers Sean

Jules, OK I am confused.... On the "Volumio" thread, Martin has just used his day off to upgrade "Spotify Connect in the new build of Volumio is v0.9.1, which has the next track fix" Read more: theaudiostandard.net/thread/4216/volumio?page=15#ixzz5ij0LLbtSUrhm I upgraded to the same version of Volumio around the 12th or 13th and yet seem to be behind with only 0.9.0??? Maybe, if you have not done so, upgrading volumio should fix spotify connect?? Cheers Sean

Just noticed it tonight, Jules. It's a bit of a pain but I worked around it by adding the track to the queue and then clicking 'next track'. It then plays. I'll have a look at the Volumio support forum to see if it's been picked up yet. I notice this hasn't been solved by the latest volumio update, anyone have any idea if it's going to be sorted soon? I can confirm that the manual upgrade to 0.9.0 (12/03/2019) version of spotify connect works well. Just follow the instructions on gitHub. Some of the versions between 0.8.4 and 0.9.0 introduced other problems, but, 0.9.0 works well for me Cheers Sean

I have upgraded automagically to v2.565 of Volumio as shown below. Seems to work.... Not sure which version of spotifyConnect2 it came with... I was already on 0.9.0 (12th March) via a harmless manual update as per the instructions.
Cheers Sean
2.565 (12-03-2019) FIXES Fixed goto for Streaming services Fixed plugin uninstall Fix next and previous in volatile state Fix kHz notation Removed backup REST endpoint Deal with devices without a serviceList in UPNP Notify when there are no results on search Updated dutch translation Added link to artist and album in track-info-bar Improved stability of MyVolumio presence system
NEW ADDITION New US and Asia servers for MyVolumio remote connection

While I agree with everything Martin and Slinger have written above, I also see things slightly differently :
Whilst we have had excellent results, ease of use, flexibility and tremendous value for money, this technology is in it's infancy. Big strides forward are still being made, either because of the latest DAC or simply straightening out the separation, routing and noise/jitter of power supplies and clocks. With things moving so fast, I would be reluctant to spend serious money on a "final solution" streamer at this time. I'm happy to spend £10s to £100s on new DACs and other improvements which are arriving thick and fast. Many of us enjoy tweaking and tinkering as part of the hobby and the Pi and associated bits are perfect for this.
Martin & Co are branching into unchartered territory with their I2S approach. This is a bold approach, but needs to be made if we are to collectively understand the best ways to plumb this hardware together and where the inherent strengths and weaknesses are in the digital reproduction pipeline.
A Pi 3B can happily play 24@192 flacs, the 3B+ offers about 17% more oomph for £35 and the Pi 4 will probably be along in 2020. One would hope it will cope with full fat DSD
My Pi "player" is a perfect example of "Trigger's broom", it is on it's 3rd DAC/Digi HAT and 2nd Pi board. It has evolved as my needs have changed. Currently, since I am a nomad it has a amp HAT to form an ultraportable player. During all of this, the user interface and the link to my music library, and now streaming, has remained constant through Volumio or Moode.
I am consuming and controlling music in ways I never thought possible... streaming, shouting at Alexa, shouting at my phone in the car, prodding phones, tablets and watches. Casting music left, right and centre. Whilst these activities are a little bit of diversion from the pursuit of quality reproduction, the flexibility and ergonomic improvements are exciting. I am proud of *MY* music library, but the concept of *MY* music is fading, you can paste me a streaming link here, you can send me a playlist and if you come to my house, most of *your* music will follow come with you via streaming.

My understanding, although don't quote me on it, Phil is that the Pi has limited processing power, so if you bought one of the dedicated streamers with more processing power it should work better in theory. I have just investigated the CPU usage during playback of a 24@192 flac file. The "top" command shows that mpd (Music player daemon) never goes above about 23% of cpu usage. The all other processes added together are unlikely to take the total cpu load above 25%. This was on a stock Pi 3 model B which is NOT under / overclocked. It is driving an early Allo BOSS DAC and running Volumio v2.555. The music is being shared from a "windows" SMB share on my "pretend NAS", (slow 4TB USB3 portable drive hanging off of my router). Across wired gigabit ethernet. A flac file in 16@44.1 made mpd peak at 9.3% CPU. This had upsampling set to 24@176 with "very high" quality, which is probably the toughest resampling in terms of CPU load. Playing a spotify track in HQ via v0.8.7 of spotify connect2 seemed to hover around 6% CPU Cheers Sean

OK, I have updated to the March 1st version of SpotifyConnect.... once installed it still shows as v0.8.5
I simply repeated the instructions which I assume has deleted and/or overwritten the previous manual install.
I was a little more cautious this time, with a Pi reboot in between deleting, reinstalling and connecting spotify.
So far so good....
Cheers Sean
