Genesis + Phil Collins. Just writing the words makes me feel ill. Do you mean any Genesis? What about Peter Gabriel era? Any Genesis!

I'd add Scat singing to that. In my opinion it ruins the song in at least 90 % of cases. I'll agree with that 90% figure. I always think of Cleo Laine when I think of scat; great voice, really, really annoying technique, It was her that made me realise that "scat" was just short for scatological.

There's a certain brand of female singing that deems it necessary to wring 57 different notes out of one single syllable. That gets me ra(aaaa-eee-iiii-oooo-uuuu-doh-rey-me-faa-sooo-laaaa-teeee)aaaah)nting. What REALLY gets my goat is when they refer to that sort of "song-style" as R&B. It may have rhythm, it is certainly not blues, and Rhythm and Blues it most definitely Is. Fekkin'. Not! Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Booker T, even Otis, THAT's R&B. Today, bands like Vintage Trouble play R&B. Female singers with only one name very rarely do. Some of them scrape into the "Blue-eyed soul" category, as Paul Young did, and Hall & Oates, but not R&B. Do you feel me brothers and sisters?

Rhythm and Blues or in the modern case Bass. I quite enjoy Rhythm and blues and don't mind Rhythm and bass

I'm somewhat baffled, Jules. Genesis, like Yes and many other prog rock groups, has its roots in classical music. Many of their pieces are structured like symphonies.

Rhythm and Blues or in the modern case Bass. I quite enjoy Rhythm and blues and don't mind Rhythm and bass Not even heard of Rhythm and bass ! Surprised to find that Pendulum are classed by some as Drum and bass. Unlikely for me to like and drum and bass. So many years after the great John Peel left us I discover yet another of the bands he played. Recently re discovered Severed Heads and The Rave ups. Rare stuff, expensive that nudges me towards streaming

Another category of band that just puzzles me is what I think of as loud guitar-led jangling noise. I know a few of you like guitar-led music but I'm thinking of the unpleasant noisy unredeeming wall-of-sound that I've been occasionally subjected to. The kind where there are zero dynamics because it's loud from start to finish, where you could remove your woofer and tweeter and it would hardly sound any different.
To my ears, it isn't music, but it is definitely annoying.

Name names! Reveal the offenders! Oh, I couldn't possibly. An example band would be The Ramones, most of whose output sound like the same noise to me.

I am probably guilty more than most of subjecting Martin to loud guitar bands

It's interesting how it seems that we're much more interested in talking about other people's bad taste than our own good taste.

And as a demonstration I will list two bands that I really cannot see why others find so good: Steely Dan Can Dull as ditchwater!
