Bill Bailey, best known for being a comedian is a very accomplished musician
Watching this makes me want to get through the barrier I seem to have understanding the nuts and bolts of music Minor and major chords and the like
I've tried a few times to understand in music what is going on, what moves me, what bores me etc.
Anyone got simple stuff for the hard of understanding ?

Buy a half-decent (i.e. one that stays in tune) acoustic guitar and visit Guitar Tricks.com/ or just hunt for free guitar lessons on YouTube. There's nothing like learning an actual instrument, or at least, the rudiments of one, to enhance understanding.

Just working out where the notes are on a fretboard can be a help in understanding their relationships with each other, Mike. Maybe it's time to have another stab at it? You can stuff your head with theory but that's really not going to teach you as much as sounding out the notes for yourself. Maybe a cheap keyboard would suit you better.

I've tried a few things over the years. Will have a bash with the guitar again.
Wonder if YouTube has something for the hard of thinking....
Also wonder if it was explained to me simply I still wouldn't get it

There are tons of free lessons on YouTube, Mike. It's just a case of trying a few to see which one fits. The trick is not to give up just because your fingers are bleeding on the strings.

If you are trying to understand why you like something try to think about what they have in common, I do not think you have to good understanding of music theory to understand why you like something. For me, music theory helps a bit to appreciate what someone is doing. If you want to try to go deeper understand what key they are in, is it major or minor? Do you like mostly pentatonic based music with a 1 4 5 progression? or something a bit more different? I am sure with some of the music you like they will be a theoretical analysis of the music. Try a google search I found playing the guitar was a big life-changer in how I listened to music

You can't beat having "the music" in your hands, or at your fingertips, Mike.

Also there is a wide range in one category from horrid to wonderful Major and minor keys, pentatonic, 1 4 5 progression I almost understand Bought the Crosby, Stills and Nash book and had poor results from that on the guitar. Might be I submerge in the music, mental block or too many bangs on the head

What separates Jeff from other mortals is his amazing phrasing He puts so much more into each note and has always developed

I see what your getting at here Mike. As a few of you may have noticed I'm entirely pig ignorant about Music structure. I know what a crescendo is but that's about it.
It's interesting as I'm so open eared that I keep finding different things I like - the recurring theme seems to be quality. I like well recorded and well produced music. It's another thing that's good here...you can ask questions and not feel like a total twat.

I only have clues, not clear direction, on what I like. Whether rock or classical or anything else, I like atmosphere and wide cinematic sweeps. It doesn't have to have a hooky melody but sometimes that's just perfect. I don't need songs to have words, but the voice can be a beautiful instrument and massed voices even more beautiful. I like (this influenced by classical music) changes of mood and pace and key - that's why Mahler and Yes work for me. I prefer downbeat and minor keys to upbeat and major keys. I prefer ballads over rowdy songs. Sad over happy. Long rather than short. I like that composers like Shostakovich and Vangelis can create atmosphere and place you somewhere in just a few bars. I like that a guitar can sing in the hands of Beck and Gilmour and Knopfler. I also like that Yello can break all these rules and still remain one of my all-time favourites.
When all this is summed up - I still haven't a clue!

It all comes down to "I don't know much about art, but I know what I like," in the end.
