Hello. I recently bought a bulk lot of loose 7" records, and was surprised by some of what it contained.
This was primarily classic rock & easy listening from the 50s-70s, lots of stuff like Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, The Platters, The Temptations, etc. There were also a few children's and Christmas records mixed in, which is what the red and yellow vinyl pictured is. The thing that surprised me was that this is my first encounter with something other that 7", 10" or 12". The yellow records are 6", and one of the red ones is 6.5"!
Now, I was able to find the 6" & 6.5" on Discogs and see that they are supposedly 78 RPM, my main question is for the 7" on the left of that photo. I can't find any information at all regarding that particular record anywhere online. Even information on the label (Voco) is scarce. Is there any way to identify the speed of the record before playing it? From some research I've gather than the grooves in 78s are different and require a special stylus for proper playback, so here are some closeups for reference:
Peter Donald, Mitch Miller And Orchestra – The Night Before Christmas 6"
Claude Kirchner And Elmira Roessler – Old MacDonald 6.5"
(Artist Unknown, Voco Records) Brahms Lullaby / Rockabye Baby 7"
The one in question is on translucent red vinyl with dark speckling, though I'm not sure if that is intended or from age. The only information I have is what is on the record itself, which is:

Additionally, I'm iffy on the playback of 78s. At the moment my primary turntable is a Sony PS-LX310BT, which works great for what it is, but it has virtually no user calibration or customization. The head unit and cartridge are proprietary and Sony does not make a compatible 78 stylus. As an alternative I "borrowed" the turntable my parents have but have never used, an Ion TTUSB that my brother gave them for converting my father's old records (they never did). On this you can change out parts, so I am ordering a new head unit and 78 compatible cartridge. My next problem is that both the Sony and the Ion are only 2 speed, but I believe that with the proper needle I should be able to play back the records at a lower speed then adjust the digital copy. Ideally I'd get a whole new player that could do variable speed (I've got my eye on the Audio Technica AT-LP120XUSB
) but unfortunately that isn't in my budget at the moment.
Should what I laid out here work fine, or does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative way to convert 78s to digital?
Thanks.
