Gosh, that is a surprising move. I wonder how long the vinyl resurgence will continue?

I don't suppose it has anything to do with rampant price jacking? A sad day for me, someone who used to walk past the original factory every day on the way to school.

Hmmm ... the stereonet page has disappeared - maybe they are retracting the article?

An SME 3009-II Improved was pretty much my first hi-fi purchase, bought from Laskys in Tottenham Court Road.

I can 100% say that a factory communication was sent out to ALL SME dealers this morning stating NO tome arm sales only via SME decks, they even stated no more O.E. other TT manufacturer specials either!!
So now you can start to get to grips with really decent MUSICAL arms at more attractive pricing and SOUND QUALITY imho.
Understand the reasoning behind this but feel you will come to regret this imho

I don't understand why they would want to give away sales.

I used to drool over some of their gear. I worked for their service department. Picked up quite a few bits of customer returns for next to nothing. And after more than three decades I still have some of them in my possession.

I remember hearing Celestion Ditton 66 speakers there and thought they were fab. Then I heard some big Altec Lansings in Lindair and I was in love!

No, I have been trying to remember the model number for ages but have so far failed. It was a fair bit later than the ax period and before the bx. They were vinyl wrap budget bookshelf beasties.

Nothing to do with all of modern arms with better performance & lower price on the market in the last few years compared to SME 1980s designs & all the new " super arms " like Vertere & SAT with £35k+ prices tags
Oems will just re-source new suppliers , bet you Jelco phone is ringing of the hook

They don't speak any languages apart from Japanese and their arms whilst good were never in the same league as even the cheapest SME (309 as an example) I think the Indian guy who owns SME will have told companies like Kondo before they announced it and orders would have been placed in the background for OEM arms to stock up before the official announcement. As an example a 12" is £5800 For a lot less money you can get this Reed 3P, I have 2 on 2 of my decks, I have owned 309's, 312's, IV, and V and whilst they are held in high esteem by some I always thought they sounded a bit sterile. Choice is a good thing.
