A few years ago, after buying a Allo Digione for my RPi3, because Allo claimed jitter is lower with BNC, I purchased a 0.5m Van Damme 75 ohm cable terminated with a BNC connector at one end for the Digione. Later I read in a thread on AOS that suggested longer coax cables are better (1.5m) so I dutifully purchased a Belden coax cable and until recently have used that without noticing a difference. Fast forward a couple of years... After experimenting with USB from a RPI4 which seems to be very cable sensitive, I wondered if the same was true for SPDIF. I dug out my 0.5m cable and wow.. all the good things that I had heard with RPi4/USB were there plus the treble that was missing.
Does coax cable length really make a difference, or is it the cable or the BNC connector?

I found Belden to not sound very good. I think this has more influence than length, although 1.5m is quoted as ideal.

My experience is that the quality of the cable is quite important hers IIf you wish I can lend you my Coherent Coax cable for you to try out for a few weeks to see if this helps you.

Hi John, that's very generous of you but the coherent is way out of my price range, costing more than my DAC and streamer combined. For £150 or so, I have ordered a 1.5m length of the Van Damme cable I have already so I can make a direct like-for-like comparison of the two lengths.

For less than £100 you could look for a used Black Cat Silverstar which is the best co-ax S/PDIF cable I've used.

1.5m is optimal I believe. Something about reflections if shorter.

I think Stratmangler has the low-down on it, and yes I think it is related to reflections.

I am happy to measure any digital cable full measurements not just reflections
I also do not subscribe to 1.5m length for either digital or mains cables
