What tracks feature a vocal that just gets your spine tingling, and why?
Here's one to get us started. How many singers do you know who can hold these notes, thoroughly exposed, to such perfection?
k d lang - Don't Smoke in Bed

She's certainly a great vocalist, I love her cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, the best Ive heard of that great song.

I put that one in for you, Jerry. She has an exceptional voice.

I'd put forward Loreena McKennitt's Breaking the Silence for the sheer passion and emotional power.

This is a field recording made by ethnomusicologisit John Levy in 1971, whilst documenting the traditional and folk music of Bhutan. Soundwise, it's not a great recording - not done in a studio, obviously - but the performance itself is breathtaking (for me, at least). The song itself is a very old Bhutanese folk song; as I recall, the liner notes stated that it was not translatable.
Many of my favourite vocals are on field recordings.

London Grammar - Hey Now
I love the atmospheric vocal here. Ironically the first few times I heard it I didn't like it much, but over time I have fallen for London Grammar's powers.
Mary Black - Summer Sent You
My favourite female artist by far. Not necessarily her best song, but I really like her voice on this.
Máire Brennan - Cé Leis
Enya's sister who in my opinion has a much better voice.

Ricky Lee Jones, "Last Chance Texaco".
I love the way it ranges from breathy delicacy to a soaring emotional cry.

How about Björk, but where to start?
"Hunter" is always impressive for it's sheer emotionality. And how about this?

The other end of the scale from k d lang is the smoky/breathy type voice. Norah Jones does it for me, and she sounds even more brilliant live.

Kate Bush on Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up." Listen to it on headphones and it's like Kate is breathing the words directly into your brain.

Another fine, idiosyncratic, voice.

Still on female vocalists at the moment (mainly 'cos I misread the title of the thread!) I find the sheer involvement and emotion that Natalie Merchant gives to her signing utterly mesmerising. I could name loads, but an unusual, but especially atmospheric performance is, "The Gulf of Araby".

Peter Gabriel is a particular favourite of mine and also David Byrne and the Duet he performed with Rufus Wainwright of "Au fond du temple saint" from The Pearl Fishers works very well I think.
And how about Elvis Costello, at his angry best on "Little Palaces from "Kind of America".
And one of my favourite performances by Christy Moore is "Beeswing" - another performance oozing emotion,

I'm going to have to hurl at Rufus Wainwright, Pete. His voice and singing style makes me want to, well, vomit.

I have always been a great fan of Elton John's voice and music.
