I’ve listened to Chord digital a few times including the Blu / Dave combo. Despite all the positive reviews it’s never done much for me. Lots of detail at the expense of that elusive emotion imo. A Chord rep told me that some folk just can’t handle all that extra detail. I said that I should be dead after a live event if that’s true assuming that live should present maximum detail.

The odd thing is Robin, it really isn't that detailed, what it does excel at is emphasizing leading edge detail wonderfully without question, it does demonstrate a very solid sound, yet it cannot deliver trailing note decay and sustain awfully well, part of the larger ability to create a truly three dimensional sound (back filling the notes to deliver texture and tonal quality). Easily demonstrated, however it does have a fair few fans. I remember the very first time I listened to a dac64 and was blown away bought one on the spot, yet 6 weeks later it was traded back for a Wadia. I actually still own a very early DAC 64 2002 vintage I believe but that model has a torriodial not a SMPS as with all of this audio YMMV

The way I'm reading the Chord characteristics is that the high (re)sampling rates allow the use of long filters. How much of the sound is due to sampling rates vs filters is something I can explore with HQPlayer as it has many filters available; only a couple being of the type Chord use. This is another argument against M Scaler as a software implementation not tied to hardware is more flexible.

BTW the standard Qutest (no resampling or very long filters) whilst good is not massively different to other DACs, just a little better in some areas. It's with the HQPlayer it becomes a very different beast. What I don't know is how this relates to the sound of Qutest with M Scaler.

Try listening to Minimum Phase or Apodising filters, Clive, and see how they compare with brick wall.

I suspect Clive the HQ player does a lot of re-clocking as was as SRC, I know mine does!

I will try the various filters Martin, I've got a good feel for how the software works now so I can move onto experimenting with the various filters. Possibly I'll set it to 705.6kHz too rather than 768kHz.
