I'm interested in how others organise their playlists, especially those that use streaming as a primary source. I'm still in the early stages, but I have the following so far: - Bands
- Male led
- Female led
- Electronic
- Prog
- Jazz
- Classical
- Bass
I have these in Qobuz and am whittling down my Spotify ones to match but only contain songs which are not in Qobuz. It's a work in progress!

I don't use playlists, I just have albums of current interest saved in my library.
Am I missing out on something?
But I'm almost entirely classical, maybe that makes a difference.

I use playlists, but like Jerry, I call them albums. When one is nearly finished, I choose another.

I just usually follow my muse Sometimes I might create a playlist based on a theme

I use the history bit in Roon a lot for playing favourite tracks. Other than that I just save albums.

I add tracks to my playlists but often then select the Album in Volumio. It's a handy way of keeping my favourites together. I don't effectively use them as a playlist, they are more like collections of CDs in handy groups.
Jerry - it's hard to remember all my preferred classical recordings so I just drop them into my Qobuz playlist which Volumio can access directly. Then, as above, I select the Album to play.

I use the history bit in Roon a lot for playing favourite tracks. Volumio has a 'Last 100' list which is very handy but unfortunately is lost when I occasionally update the OS.

I'm far more exploratory than I used to be since starting streaming, I tend not to store 'preferred' recordings for long but try out other or related recordings of the same piece of music. So my album library is mostly items under current investigation. I also use the album library to store things I have come across in reviews for later perusal. I do sometimes forget a particular favourite recording and then have an 'Oh yes' moment when I stumble across it again in a search! And sometimes I realise that that particular favourite has now been supplanted by something better or maybe my tastes have just evolved.

Yep.
I think the word 'Playlist' is giving some people the wrong impression. I never use it for the function of playing a list of songs that I've built. For me, it's a collection/cataloguing device.

Hmm, yes, I might investigate the utility of that for my own purposes. I take it it can only store individual tracks? - even so, it would act as a link to an album. EDIT - actually it stores whole albums on Spotify

I been thinking about alphabetical and styles but to be honest Spotify is not a great platform for this and have better things to do with my time 😊

At the moment I do not organise the music that I access in an online / server-based manner other than via the streamer interface or music server defaults. However, I often think I should. I usually either search for something that I have heard about on Tidal or access an album that I know I have on the server via its interface - I do not structure the online searches as if I like the new material enough I will either purchase a Hi-Res download or a physical copy. I do need to think about this more though as one of the objectives of installing servers / renderers / streamers into the systems was to access better my utterly chaotic CD collection and be able to access it in both the UK and Germany (I've started, but have a long way to go): I still plan to keep a sub-set of CDs to play on the Lector and will continue to use LPs.
The only 'playlist' I have at the moment are some test tracks, which I know is not what you mean, Martin. I'm not yet sure how I would structure the collection beyond album/artist and basic genre - mood might be an interesting concept though.

I'm doing it in Qobuz as it's now my primary source and I can use it at work as well as at home. Yes, I put a track in and then either play that alone or play the album, as I wish.
It's the electronic version of browsing my CDs.

I aint no streamer, but it sounds like the way Martin is using playlists is similar to the way that I use genre tags, so here's my genre list:
Ambient Anime Chamber Music Chanson Children's China Choral Christmas Drone Electronic Experimental Field Film Folk Game Hip Hop Indian Instrumental Japan Jazz Latin Noise Orchestral Other Pop Rock Solo Piano
There are some categories - like Electronic or Jazz - which cover such a wide array, and that have gotten so full, that I could do with breaking them down into sub-genres. An odd one is 'Other', which is where I put anything that doesn't seem to me to fit naturally into any of the others - things like Philip Glass and Steve Reich go here.

things like Philip Glass and Steve Reich go here They go into my Classical list - but you could break that down into Baroque, Romantic, 20th Century etc. See our Master Album Choice list for examples.

I recorded John Peel programmes from late 70s on. Used to hearing mostly individual tracks in that order. Some of the changes are wonderful. The order is mostly by accident with many tracks Peel played not there and often on tape in reverse order (I forget why, something to do with retaping)
Collecting those tracks and playing those albums has nothing like the same effect as the mix of tracks Certain tracks feed off those before and after He often cherry picked the best tracks from the albums so the so so ones were left out

Hmm, yes, I might investigate the utility of that for my own purposes. it seems too clumsy with my Spotify implementation. All the tracks are shown and the album cover graphic is not. It will quickly turn into a near meaningless jumble. Now if multiple album libraries were available, that would be good. But they don't seem to be. ..... ah ok, just save 1 track from each album to a playlist then click on album identifier to retrieve it

Constructing a playlist would be different to the accidental list I have. The tapes are a happy accident. Current tracks from then mixed with much older tracks willy nilly
