This legal ruling could have a significant impact in many live music venues. www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-47965734'The Royal Opera House has lost its appeal over the life-changing hearing damage caused to a viola player at a rehearsal of Wagner's Die Walkure. The Court of Appeal ruled unanimously that the ROH failed to take reasonable steps to protect Christopher Goldscheider during the 2012 rehearsal.' The bell of a trumpet was immediately behind his right ear during the rehearsal and noise levels reached 132 decibels - roughly equivalent to that of a jet engine. His hearing was irreversibly damaged. Mr Goldscheider, from Bedfordshire, now has to wear ear defenders to carry out everyday household tasks such as preparing food. 132dB

One wonders why he didn't say something like "can I move away from the trumpet please" or just get up and move. If 132dB SPL is to be believed, that would cause damage to anyone's hearing.

It wouldn't take more than a moment of exposure to something like that to cause real damage, I would have thought. Any reaction on his part might well just have been too late.

Think the loudest concert I been to was Yngwie Malmstem at the Marquee only gig I been to with people shouting to turn it down I actually never wore ear defenders at a concert Ironically I only just developed Tinnitus due to a ear infection a few months ago I consider myself quite lucky to develop it later in life

I hope this gives a nudge to all orchestral musicians who are regularly exposed to very high sound levels - ideally they would all be using musicians earplugs.
I started wearing these to rock concerts just last year but am very glad I did ...

We went to an engagement party a little while back. The 'disco' was extremely clear and clean with amazing bass. I think it was using some medium size pro monitors but I didn't go up close to look, mainly because it was far too loud. I mentioned this to one of the engagement couple and to one of the mothers and was later told it had been turned down, which I doubted. It was stupidly loud and there were young children in attendance. We left after half an hour because I just didn't find it comfortable.

Hope I will never experience 132db
I have said many times "loud is good"
Will have to change that to "sensible loud is good"
The disco and similar must be ego

You were lucky, some recent disco setups for weddings etc. I've been to have had execrable sound. That combined with over-driven levels makes for a quick escape for me.

Step daughter's wedding had a slightly too loud disco. Unfortunately the sound quality was appalling

The loudest band I ever heard was Canned Heat. After the gig, I was deaf for about 15 minutes. I do mean "deaf" too; I had a high-pitched buzzing in my head and I couldn't hear anyone or anything until it cleared. It made getting back to where I was staying, in a town I didn't know, by bus, interesting, to say the least. The Pink Fairies ran it close. We decamped to the bar where the volume was still more than adequate. Back in the hall, people were still trying to get their heads inside the bass bins.

Black Sabbath for me. I couldn't hear properly for days afterwards. Not nice, and would never tolerate that loudness again.

Yes Sabbath was pretty loud Read a Ted Nugent story and reported people complaining 15 miles away also a bird ecploding when it flew by his speaker stack No wonder he is death and his brain is also pretty fried up

We once played a big, outdoor, charity gig and we sound-checked in the afternoon. When we arrived to play that evening we were told that people from two villages away had remarked on how loud our sound-check was.

I saw Manowar a couple of times in the early 80's who were supposedly the loudest band in the world back then.
Only gig I ever walked out of was Judas Priest a few years back - only lasted a couple of songs. Was so loud I thought my brain was about to implode.
I wouldn't have sat through the Iron Maiden show last year without musicians earplugs. Just punishing volume levels.

Been to a few loud ones. Loudest must have been Lifetime at Birmingham Town Hall
Remember wincing every time the roadie tapped the drums when he was setting up
When they came on it was a physical assault on all the senses. Wonderful too
Remember a few gigs where the hearing was off for a while after

My ears took a regular pummeling at warehouse parties when I was in my 20s. As a result I have a little tinnitus in my right ear. But I've had my hearing tested and aside from some high frequencies which are masked by the tinnitus at low levels it's very good, which is a relief. Now on the rare occasions that I do go clubbing I always wear earplugs - I wish I'd done so when I was younger, makes for a much nicer experience.

Good idea
I have earplugs in case we have any noise from next door. Surprising how much you can still hear. Knocking it down 30-40db makes for an easier sleep

Ironically I only just developed Tinnitus due to a ear infection a few months ago I consider myself quite lucky to develop it later in life Hopefully the tinnitus will subside if it was an infection although lots of people get it as their hearing deteriorates .

The Who and quite recently ( Quadrophenia ) , I had to take a break the noise was ridiculously loud , considering Townshend has/had chronic tinnitus.
