I'm sitting here listening to music on a system that cost virtually nowt (and enjoying it immensely I might add), I wonder where that places me in the grand scheme of things? Not that I care a jot by the way...

I think you might be right about the cool thing but I long gave up about caring about cool Same here. I just tell it as it is. Some folk, however, I don't think are quite as honest... If in reality, if you're more into hi-fi than music, then why not just say so and be done with it? Marco. most folk don't care mate.

In any case, I care because I find it disingenuous. Anyway, we shall move onwards and upwards! Marco.

As a matter of logic . my perception of myself ,as a book lover , audiophile or music lover cannot be disingenuous. Perception cannot be disingenuous. It may be inaccurate or fail to measure up to some objective standard pedants may wish to apply my perception of these trivial matters to , but it sure as hell cannot be disingenuous.
Additionally , if trying to place someones perception of themselves as music lover , book lover or audiophile in to some kind of objective semantic hierarchical criteria is contentious , then I will vote for cock Cameron on 2015 !!!!!
It be useless , boring , trivial and irrelevant , it not be contentious .

You, of all people, have got a bloody cheek to talk about pedants!!! Anyway, it's not about the perception you have of yourself, it's the perception you portray to others. I think that some folk are in denial, in terms of how much a music lover they actually are Marco.

Let's get back on track I hope you will forgive just one more post before you get back to the awfully boring subject of cables Before I came out here, I threw out at least half of my music. Basically that which I had not listened to since I bought it. I now have around 400 LPs and the same number of CDs. I have more music than I can properly listen to whilst I am still here. At new prices, I am quite sure that my HiFi is worth considerably more than the music. However, when I listen to that music, i want to hear it with the greatest quality sound that I can get. If the only piece of music I really loved was Take 5 (and I do really like it but there are others) and listened to it all the time, I would still want it to sound its best. What does that make me.....apart from a bit limited in choice? I would say I was a Take 5 lover not a hi-fi lover!! Its just never that simple.

I have lots of records, lots of CDs, quite expensive hifi, including some fancy cables, and shedloads of books. My self-perception is of a reasonably bright, lazy, disorganised bloke. What perception do others have of me? No idea. I remember being astonished many years ago, just after I left school, that some people there thought I was 'scary', which is about as far from my self-perception as it's possible to get, so I concluded that trying to 'see yourself as others see you' is essentially a doomed exercise.

Ah, there is the other thing. The music has to share my time with the books. Probably more of them that LPs and CDs added together.

Hi Gordon, I'd say in that scenario, you'd be a Take 5 loving audiophile! Here's another one... If you spend more time with your head under the bonnet of your car, twiddling with the engine, than in the driving seat, are you more of a mechanic than a car enthusiast? Marco.

I am very fortunate to have both a large collection of music and quality replay system, however I just do not get the time I would love to listen to as much music as I would like.
Listening to music, like riding a bike or (god forbid a late mid life US crisis pig iron) or a quality motor is about maintaining a balance of life <> work priorities.
Which is why I savor every moment I can listening to new music

Interesting thread at the mo, so apologies for staying off course . . . I think its impossible to pidgeon hole an audiophile/music lover, as not only does it depend on our own perception, but those of our peers? If you put me in a HiFi forum, especially somewhere like AoS, then I know nowt about what the majority talk about, apart from maybe Spinning Today and I'm comfortable describing myself as purely a music fan, with very litte interest in gear..... but, I do like good sound quality. Put me amongst my work mates and first off they wouldn't know what an audiophile was, but if you defined it they would say I was one and they also think I'm a little odd and obsessive about music. So who is right? Mostly I don't really care these days, I'm eternally grateful to HiFi forums for not only getting me the sound I want, but for also saving me money. I have never enjoyed my music collection so much, which I wouldn't trade for anything. The only thing I hanker after is having the time to really immerse myself in my music, as I buy more than I can keep up with, which is a downside to loving file based audio, music for me is just too tempting at second hand CD prices, I mean who can turn stuff down on Amazon Marketplace at £1.27? But really, does any of it matter? I just love music, listening to it, learning new stuff, taking part in it and collecting it . . . it makes the world a better place, so just enjoy it

That may be the case, Gary, but I guess the same goes for a lot of stuff written on forums. Anyway, Tim seems fairly interested in the subject, and as others have said, it's a damn good distraction from discussing Slic, which most folk are sick to the back teeth of, especially now as it's 'yesterday's news' Marco.

Hi Marco, Wasn't meaning people personally weren't interested in what your saying mate, just that I imagine that for a lot of folk they don't have a need to profess one or 'tother and just enjoy the hobby in whatever way works for them. I do enjoy having the kit, there's pride of ownership there for me, but really its just a way of getting closer to the music when at home. Mrs Gazjam sings in a band and gigs a lot around Scotland, so we see live stuff quite often.
