OK, I moved the HDMI board ground to pin 6 with 5V on pin 2, which seems more logical. This is where the Kali expects to receive power, but it actually gets it at the two test pins close to the power jack. There is a small reduction in brightness which goes in the right direction.

Now that is interesting, thanks for the feedback Martin. I wonder if there is more to be gained, maybe not as you are using a split supply....

At the moment it's only split back to the double USB socket in the QP-1 power supply. When it's been modified, there will be two separate supplies keeping the 'clean' for the Kali/HDMI away from the 'dirty' for the Pi. The max. current will be increased to 6A giving a lower output impedance, too. I hope that will yield another small improvement.
