I first heard about Steven Wilson when recommended one of his earlier albums, The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories) released in 2013 and have remained a fan, although not always liked everything he has produced.
To the Bone is the first album that he has produced that I have liked instantly, the first couple of songs caught my attention immediately and I had to hear more. It was also the first album I bought on CD for a while too.
This album is Steven Wilson's move further towards the Pop genre, and I like the way in which he appears to have mashed together the Progressive Rock and Pop genres to full effect.
It also helps that the musicianship is excellent and the album is well produced.
I don't think it's great form to pick something so recent.
If you didn't notice there was a rash of postings about this album on and following release day - I was listening to it after midnight on release day, before I went to bed.
It's a great album.
I have it on CD and LP, and also purchased the 24/96 download from Qobuz (and yes, there are very subtle but discernible things can be heard in the higher rez files than the 16/44.1 can manage).
Went to see SW at The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester on the evening of April 1st 2018, and it was a great gig. My son and I were blown away.
Do you recognise the text in my signature?
If you don't, you haven't listened to the album properly
10/10 of course .......

Once we've made sense of our world, we wanna go fuck up everybody else's because his or her truth doesn't match mine. But this is the problem. Truth is individual calculation. Which means because we all have different perspectives, there isn't one singular truth, is there?

An eight from me. Quite "poppy" in places, as was mentioned but not to its detriment. A lot of the songs remind me a bit of Genesis, not so much in sound, but in structure. Again, not a bad thing. Also pastoral prog from the late sixties/early seventies is in there somewhere and even a bit of Barclay James Harvest. Good stuff, just not quite great stuff.
I didn't use to need the internet, my wife knew everything.
Didn't realise I have this , which probably says what I think of it . I have tried oh so hard in the past to like Porcupine Tree but I didn't like the singer or the songs , the music is ok and very well played/produced etc but there is something about modern Prog bands that don't click with me . So yes Steven Wilson for me can't write a melody , a catchy tune , well it's prog not pop I hear you say , his voice is boring it lacks dynamics , he is massively popular so what do I know.
5/10 for To The Bone
I have a few albums and there is one album and on it one song that is very good in fact it's excellent The Raven That Refused To Sing .
Not a words man to be honest, but I have read a few reviews, including one with Steven Wilson himself where he mentioned that he was moving towards the pop genre.

I take it you are a massive fan and will be at all of his next concerts then, Barry haha!

That's interesting about him moving to more pop stuff , must have been taking note of a few critics TBF this album is a lot more commercial and has broken into the main stream .
My sort of music and I really ought to like it a lot. Reminds me of all sorts of bands I love Maybe that's why it's ok, not riveting or special Might listen again but not keen on his or any of the female vocals

I haven’t listened to this album for a while for various reasons including running through back catalogue of The Jayhawks, and had a chance to listen to it tonight again.
I think it’s quite brilliant, Pop, Rock and Prog all in one album, plus excellent musicianship and tunes.
