I was listening to the early (great) Karajan Beethoven 9 last night.

I like this, too I like it too! Listening now - the first movement is absolutely stunning. István Várdai is a supremely musical and communicative performer - we need more of him.

The second movement of the B Minor takes a little time to catch fire but when it does, it is captivating; I can hear a distant echo of pastoral elements of Elgar and Vaughan Williams in there.
The final movement is all action and endlessly inventive. It’s a technical tour de force but so musical - quite how Vardai does that pizzicato and bowing seemingly at the same time, I don’t know. I also love the pitch-bending he does at 9-30, sounds like he is tuning his strings at the same time as playing!
Top drawer.

this is fine music, the violin concerto by Ludomir Rozycki, well worth a listen. Composed in 1944, although you'd have a hard time guessing that; pure Romanticism!

Karl Holler cello concerto, in good mono sound. Why on earth isn't this part of the core repertoire? - wow, powerful and melodic, great stuff.

Furtwangler - there's an uncontroversial figure!

Furtwangler - there's an uncontroversial figure! I been just reading about him and good to see someone stand up against the Nazis which would of not been easy to do with his background
