I'm not normally a fan of 'themed' classical compilations, however, Yuja Wang's 'Fantasia' is very well thought out indeed (save the seemingly random Scarlatti!) and certainly gives me that fleeting feeling of being transported to otherworldly realms.
To me, this recording is the perfect marriage of her technique and musicality. It's very intense, varied but heavy on Rachmaninov and Scriabin - major tick, I hope she plays some at her London recital next year. I found a touching intimacy and emotional depth in her handling and understanding of these composers that has often eluded me in past sampling of her work.
The 'Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka' is a really fun, virtuoso indulgence which showcases her immense power in the lower registers whilst the tireless right hand carves out irresistibly cascading and shimmering melodies. 'Danse Macabre' is given a similarly breathless but intricate and sumptuous workout.
Immensely enjoyable from start to finish - an old school album in this regard. This will be a permanent fixture on spoti for me.

A great performance of the wonderful Khachaturian violin concerto. The slow movement is jaw droppingly beautiful.

A richly romantic symphony by a little known 19thC woman composer. Very enjoyable.

I couldn’t resist having a crack at this new release and can now confirm that the boy Tetzlaff is in sublime form with his Beethoven.
Just listen to his entry in the first movement - what a wonderfully joyous and sweet tone!
Indeed that’s the approach adopted throughout the work, which becomes much more playful and light-hearted than most, with some quite divine phrasing, eschewing a lot of the traditional reverence that is paid.
The second movement isn’t remotely overly romantic or saccharine, with a most judicious use of vibrato, and is just a breath of fresh air … You are left with just the purest of snow white tones.
The playfulness comes to the fore again in the 3rd where I’m whisked away to an ornate 19th century imperial ballroom, springing to life with intimate solo and boisterous group dances.
Taut and alert support from Ticciati and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin; the latter I know nothing about but would happily make a further acquaintance on a long overdue trip to Berlin!
What a delight - with this recording and Krebbers, for a very different approach, I am sorted for this Concerto.

Excellent live Mahler 2nd from Warsaw Phil this year. Superb sound, too - turn it up LOUD for the you-are-there experience

Ungh. Sublimely poetic live readings of Beethoven's last 3 piano sonatas by Leonskaja.

Louise Farrenc - what a fine composer! The 2 overtures are nicely gutsy, and the symphony is well worth a listen, too.
