Bach - Passacaglia (orch. Respighi)
Jerry was right, this really is a stunner and sounds superb.

Stokowski does it better on that Decca recording I linked to. 😉

After watching an American TV show (which is an "updated" Sherlock Holmes) where "Joan" Watson walks in on Holmes who is luxuriating in Bach's unaccompanied cello suites, and remarks "That's pretty" I felt the need to hear them again without the intrusion of such a blasphemously inadequate comment.

Stokowski does it better on that Decca recording I linked to. 😉 Interesting. Slower paced, lovely phrasing but no organ! Very left-right recording, lots of bloom and orchestral detail. I'd call it a draw, happy to listen to both for different interpretations.

Respighi was the master cheater, then!

Wonderful organist here, what do you think of this T&F, Martin?
His Passacaglia and Fugue BWV 582 is also superb.

Thanks, Jerry. I like that interpretation very much. Going to listen to this later (Stamm again)...

Stamm has very measured tempi and generally takes the Toccata without adding unnecessary trills to it. A really nice performance. The organ could do with some more welly but otherwise this is great.
His Passacaglia suffers a little from the organ sounding too reedy. Otherwise, it's again a good performance.

2 Strauss Four Last Songs last night, both very good.
First with Rene Flemming and Abbado.
Then, even better imo, with Margaret Price and George Pretre. She's just a little bit squally in the first song, then settles down to close to perfection in the last three. And Pretre is a superb Strauss conductor - he really shows Abbado (with Flemming) how it can be done, imo. But then, I'm not a big Abbado fan.

Fleming with Abbado is a beautiful partnership, especially in Im Abendrot which requires such control.
I think the Price recording works against her, but her voice for me is not quite as magical.

Here is a lovely little curiosity from 1974 - 8 top pianists playing Beethoven together, including Radu Lupu and Alicia De Laroccha.
They even do a Les Dawson style comedy version!

Great to see John Lill, too. Great stuff, Jules, many thanks for sharing it. It takes a really good pianist to be a really bad pianist while still making sure you can identify the piece being played. I often wonder how many people appreciated how good a pianist Les Dawson actually was.

Ha - that reminds me back in the day Paul, when Les was doing his piano turn on TV my mum said the same thing, which was high praise from her as she couldn't bear his comedy!

I preferred Victor Borge. He really did make me laugh.
