After my PL-71 I bought my Source which I’m still using, no plans to change. Here's an old pic - There was a very short lived Technics 1200 experience. Moved it on pronto … looked great though!

After the Michell Syncro, I went for the big one - or so I imagined. I could not find any dealer with Linn, Roksan and Pink Triangle all available for demo, so I had to listen to them all separately. Let's just say that each dealer dripped with their biases. I didn't like the Linn at all and found the Pink good but without the kind of bass extension I was looking for. So I bought a Roksan Xerxes in rosewood with an SME IV arm. This photo is of mine.

Whilst waiting for the Lenco I got an opportunity to get an VPI HW MKIV with a heavy duty platter and SME IV arm silver wired. This was a step above the Orbe better bass and soundstage. When I sold the Lenco I sold I met Vic who bought it from me as he wanted a slate plinth at a reasonable cost. Vic mentioned he had an arm he makes called the Terminator and would I be interested in selling it. I had a spare armboard so thought why not. I got the arm as really liked what it did I much preferred it to the SME IV It was better in every way

So I bought a Roksan Xerxes in rosewood with an SME IV arm. Not sure aesthetically on the arm with this but dang that rosewood is looking good! I can't remember Martin, was yours afflicted by the dreaded sag?

Oh yes, the sag. I'll broach that subject shortly.

After my Garrard rumbler SP25, I moved to an Acoustic Research deck, the first in a longish procession of decks from that company. I had Legends, EB101s, The Turntables and several of the originals. I became quite handy at getting a great sound from modifying those. I used them with several different arms, ranging from the AR models, Linn LVX and Rega, but the best combination was the last AR deck I had, a Legend, which had a Zeta and Koetsu Black. This was superb, and better than anything I had ever heard at the time, except the Townsend Rock, which was different, but not better, so I thought.

After my Xerxes developed a full-on sag, it became harder and harder to retain proper alignment. I had several conversations with Roksan who couldn't care less and would not supply me with a FOC top plate. I ended up selling the whole thing at a large loss and abandoning records for a number of years.

That's an absolute frickin' scandal Martin! How to lose any brand loyalty in one easy move - very shortsighted indeed.
How did you rate it sonically?

That's an absolute frickin' scandal Martin! How to lose any brand loyalty in one easy move - very shortsighted indeed. How did you rate it sonically? Sonically, it sounded pretty good with an AT OC9 cartridge. Adjusting the suspension and the belt alignment were both pretty tricky, but it tended to hold onto alignment (at least, at first) for longer than a Linn. It sounded much better than the fruitbox, too. As for brand loyalty, never again would I touch any Roksan product.

I still had a itch to scratch from not being able to get the Lenco set up and repaired. I had a easy solution and that was to get a Superscoutmaster plinth and rim drive from VIP I also had to get the speed controller. Another step up in performance and now really going into a rarely explored area of turntable performance. My friend Vic did a similar route with the Veras rim drive. We tried both on my turntable and it was clear that VPI use of belts was the limiting factor I add a picture tonight

I so nearly bought the original Rock on a number of occasions. Always sounded superb when I heard it at demos but I think the trough arrangement put me off at the time.

My last turntable is the Trans Fi Salvation. I seen this turntable develop from a Verus rim drive based Orbe into this special turntable. Performance is best in it class. A few step up from any other turntable I had. I not used it for a few years I would need a pre, phonostage and cartridge to get it up running again. But I am not in any rush. No plans to sell I know I would never get another turntable in the same league so staying put.

After a period of licking my wounds from the Xerxes fiasco, I bought a used STD 305M and ran it first with my old SME III arm and later with a Michell TecnoArm. It did a lot of things right and restored my faith in record playing. Shown in the photo is my rather rare Dynavector 20A2 high output MC cartridge.

My second turntable was a 1970's Linn Sondek LP12 with SME series 3 arm and Ortofon MM cartridge, it was given to me from my Dad when he decided to step away from Vinyl. I never really got on with or used this turntable, I found it too much of a faff to get it setup correctly to be bothered. It also didn't sound that great, very thin and quite bright. My wife eventually told convinced me to sell it as she didn't like the look of it!

I think you'll find that's an SME II.

I do love the looks of the LP12 - it's a design classic from that point of view. Not sure I could be bothered to own a deck where apparently you need a 'specialist' to set it up correctly though!

It was a complete pain to get ‘right’, and apparently needed regular servicing, so I lost interest to be honest.
