I have decided that my current Pi/Volumio/SMSL combo is as good as my ageing ears will ever be able to appreciate. I'll continue updating, and experimenting with, software, but that's mostly an academic exercise. The same goes for the rest of my system(s). Spending hundreds, or thousands, of pounds that I haven't got, chasing micro-improvements I'm not going to hear, seems pointless to me. My NVA system still sounds brilliant, I love my Primare amp and CD player, and unless a Primare DAC30 comes up for around £300.00 ( ) I have bought my last major (and most probably minor) hi-fi component. I've always been about the music rather than the delivery system. That's not to say that one shouldn't aspire to the best delivery system one can afford, but I honestly don't think that in my current situation health-wise, age-wise, and financially that there are any 'improvements' I can make that are even vaguely sensible for me. Obviously, " eBay Home Audio & HiFi Separates" will stay on my browser's Bookmarks bar, but from now on my interest, like my software updates, will be almost entirely academic. I am content. For the rest of you, have fun on your own journeys and always listen to your music, not your hi-fi.

Heaven forfend that I ever give up the box-swap mallarkey. It's just too interesting and too much fun. I don't bother with a proper Want List - it would be far too long to manage. .... ooo look, a new set of headphones has just arrived! Philips Fidelio X2 - yum. And if you ever notice me slowing down in my devotion to and exploration of classical music, feel free to give me a hefty nudge.

I'm not going anywhere. I can still contribute: when has knowing nothing about a subject, or a particular piece of kit, stopped someone from waffling on endlessly about it on a hi-fi forum?

It's a good position to be in. I was looking at some old photo of my system the other day and it is almost identical now to how it was 10 years ago, in terms of components.
Buying the odd pair of vintage speakers for systems 2 & 3 doesn't count.....or does it?!

It's not far off for me, and secondary systems don't count

I must admit that my systems havent changed that much in the last 7 years or so. I do experiment with new carts and I like restoring old TT's and speakers but the main "innards" of my systems give me immense pleasure and I miss them when I'm away from them. I'm now into collecting vinyl and now I seem to have a MONO fetish 8-O

My purchases of the last 6 months are my final ones for each item. These a little more expensive than I usually buy. I'm closer to 60 than 50. This cannot continue forever.
So, ATC SCM 19 speakers. Audience AU24 Sx RCA interconnects. Arriving: Beresford SEG Dac with Coherent Mods and super capped PSU.
Just leaves my amp, digital cable and speaker cables.
Someone suggested getting your ears cleaned. May do that as well!

That's not a bad system to settle down with, Brett.

I thought my journey was virtually over a few years ago. Hearing Martin T's system changed that and the system has changed 90% since. Accessories have increased hugely and improved the system hugely.
Cheap mods like granite mats on the kit, plug in mains filters and chokes on mains are fantastic VFM.
Change will come if I hear something that is VFM or is a substantial step up from where I am and a sensible price step up !

At the time though, Mike, were you happy with what you owned and enjoying using it?

I'm sure Mike was happy - but the hint is in the title of his system blog -- the search for more music - you get to hear more of what is on the recording, and so hopefully enjoy the music more, which is a worthwhile objective imo.
