Chris's trick of winding a thin cable all around the choke in a loop (see photo) increases inductance and effectiveness. Duh ! Hadn't spotted that. Need glasses on my glasses Thanks Martin - and Chris !

Before I go winding wire.....
Is that a *separate* wire to the mains or is the mains cable going in and around and if so is that safe on thicker like the fridge ?

Before I go winding wire..... Is that a *separate* wire to the mains or is the mains cable going in and around and if so is that safe on thicker like the fridge ? The cable that's wrapped around a couple of times is not a mains cable. It's the DC feed from the SMPS to the device it's powering (in the photo it's a laptop PSU) The thicker cable is a mains cable, and the choke is there to suppress the SMPS RFI from feeding back to the mains.
The reason why there's a choke either side of the PSU is because it (the PSU) generates RFI, and I want it to stay where it is, in the PSU. I don't want it (RFI) getting back to the mains, and I don't want it getting into the device that the PSU is feeding.
Where you have a thicker cable just fit a clamp, and if the clamp isn't a snug fit you can use tie wraps or electrical tape to keep it in place.

Thanks
Did you double wrap the DC feed or is that a separate cable ?

It depends on the thickness of the DC feed cable, but generally yes, a couple of times will do.

This weekend once I find out how to open them. Close to impossible

Thanks This weekend once I find out how to open them. Close to impossible The ones in my last photo can be undone with fingernails. And I don't have the strongest fingernails in the world - I'm forever breaking and tearing the damned things.
A small terminating screwdriver, or even jewellers screwdriver (like wot you tighten the frames of your specs with) might be useful. Cocktail sticks are good too. You shouldn't be wrestling to get them open ....

Put one on every electrical item with a switched mode power supply. Or use a magnet coating within the mains cable like MC5 from ABCables, AKA Alan Brown.

You don't half make a bit of a palaver about things! You're making continental drift look quick System sounds good. Life carries on without mods shock I just improved the sound of my son's bedroom system. It took all of 2 seconds to open the choke using fingernails (no nail damage). It took about 10 seconds to wrap the DC lead to the chip amp he has at the PSU end, then snap the choke together.
I'd already done the feed back to the mains, but didn't do the DC lead (I ran out of chokes at the time). Situation now rectified.
Quick check with some music - ooh, that sounds much better.

Nice!
I've choked the only two items with SMPS in my music room (gah!) but am about to buy a Chinese dual output 12V linear power supply for my router and NAS drive. Banish all noise!

Absolutely. Don't generate it in the first place, or, if that's not possible, build the SMPS properly and provide adequate filtering.

I thought I'd try a few, scattered them around a bit. Gosh - they work, don't they! Greater clarity and immediacy and focus to the sound. What a cheap tweak! I've some more on order for a bit more scattering.

They're so cheap that you needn't scatter. Put one on every cable!
