Put one on every electrical item with a switched mode power supply.

How do I know it is a switched mode power supply ?
The little box for the laptop is a give away. All wall warts, like my portable phone ? Router Broadband ? The fridge doesn't have one does it but does it deserve a choke ? Gas boiler ? Assume any PC and my Tivo must be spewing out rubbish.

Almost any set top box, router, computer, clock radio etc. these days. If in doubt, put a snap choke around it. As you said, they're cheap.

One on the AC cable and another on the DC side.

One on the AC cable and another on the DC side. Close to which ends ? One by the mains plug the other by the amp or both either side of the PSU - or other ? Once I get the principle of this I might be ok

Ideally close to the PSU both sides, but I'd put another close to the DC plug.

Thanks Will test and try out.
Remembered my alarm has a wall wart Do I need to put in an extension lead for the chokes to be on the mains side ? And same for all wall warts ?

The best thing to do with wallwart power supplies is to plug a plug-in filter (like a Tacima) right next to them.

Ah. That gives some flexibility and ideas Cheap 4 way adaptor and a couple of chokes much less though

I thought we'd been through all of this not long ago and not long before that...
Start with all the mains leads is my advice. On the stereo, the first one makes the largest difference and I'd start with the digital gear, this getting smaller as you go along. Any wall wart type supply can have a smallish one in the cable coming out (a bit after the horse has bolted, but never mind), as laptop supplies do and if multiple turns can be done, I do that as well.
Not sure these things are necessary on interconnects, but one or two very wide band cables based on rf cables may benefit (Chord Solid and Mark Grant HD cables did).
Some equipment I had was immune, the AVI CD, dac (when I had one) and preamp making no difference, but then, the designer was an rf expert and hobbyist from childhood and worked in government labs doing digital designs, so knew how to immunise his equipment from rf nasties coming in...

You took your time, Mike, but it's better late than never Everything you've listed is likely to have a SMPS in it. You forgot to add washing machine to the list, along with any other kitchen appliances - everything has them as standard.

It gets repeated, Dave, because it needs repeating.
We are what we eat. In the same way, a hi-fi system performs according to its power.
I don't think this can be over-emphasised so a few threads on the subject are fine by me.

Didn't get around to chokes as I wanted to be sure where to put them and I expected subtle improvements. Had supports sitting around for months before I tried them out. Now all kit has supports They are too difficult to undo if I had them in the wrong place/s
Was expecting subtle. The difference I can hear is ridiculously good.
Underlines what has to be the stock answer to anyone who wants to improve the soond of their system
Start with the mains

Chokes are so cheap off ebay it's a no-brainer.

The improvement chokes gave my system was worth quite a lot more than I paid. Prices very low up to 9mm Anyone know good prices for bigger ones which are difficult to find anyway ?

Found quite a few at good prices making the search on Ebay diameter specific.
Question: Fridges, freezers are on most of the time - essential ?
Washing machine and Tumble dryer rarely when listening to the system - don't bother ?

Fridges are motors and I never thought they'd chew up the mains, so I'd never considered them. Washers are on for how long - an hour or so? Again, a motor althouigh as many use brush motors? Maybe this may have an effect, but in the days when I played the stereo daily, the washing was never being done...
I've also never put them on the incoming mains cables from outside. Ours can be got to easily though...
