Let me preface this with a note to say that the author of the article I'm going to link is a well-known, recognised, expert among the Pi audio community and not some fly-by-night who thinks he's clever. There are lots of graphs and measurements that mean virtually bugger-all to me, but the conclusions are interesting, as are the proposed changes to the Pi's config.txt file and the reasoning behind them. I've found these same tweaks (and more) mentioned on the Rune forum, and ultimately I dare say I will be forced by my very nature to try them. Before that though, I need to A/B some sampling rates and check out the digital filters on my new M8 and their responses to said sampling rates. Right now though, I'm just enjoying my music. archimago.blogspot.co.uk/2017/01/measurements-raspberry-pi-3-as-usb.html

It'll probably be quite a while before I try anything. Task #1 is settling on the best-sounding Pi sampling rate/M8 filter combo. Then I need to see how the new LPSU affects it, and the delivery estimate on that is Mon, 11 Jun - Tue, 10 Jul. I want the system up and running and sounding as musical as possible before I make what could be more radical changes to the Pi. I might not get around to it until August, or even later. Still, it's nice to have some things to look forward to for a change.

I've played with the config.txt settings in the past when the Pi 1 wasn't fast enough for upsampling so I overclocked it. I'll try a variation on these settings for underclocking and will report back on any SQ changes.

There are some more comprehensive changes noted here, on the Rune forum...

I tried some setting changes just now in my Volumio build and my conclusion is that this is an area worth playing with.
Login using an SSH client like PuTTY (I used Metro PuTTY on my Windows tablet) with username volumio, password volumio.
Edit the config.txt file with the command...
sudo nano /boot/config.txt Then edit in the following lines. In Volumio, gpu_mem=16 is already there so add these lines afterwards...
arm_freq=800 sdram_freq=400 core_freq=400 gpu_freq=300 over_voltage=-2 over_voltage_sdram=-2 Use Ctrl-O to save and Ctrl-X to exit. I stuck with -2 for the undervoltage value as I didn't want to risk glitches.
It certainly sounds more spacious with a little more depth. I think there's better attack, too, although that could be a perception due to lowered noise floor.
I was listening to Stravinsky's Rite of Spring conducted by Pierre Boulez and both the spaciousness and attack were evident. Yello's The Race was also the best I've yet heard from Spotify, as good as the LP and better than the CD. Nice mods, would like to hear from others giving it a try.

I should have added, you need to restart Volumio after making the above changes.

You also need to first of all go to the IP.address/dev area to enable the ability to login. I'd show a screenshot but it's late...

Thanks, I'd forgotten that ssh is disabled by default.
Go to http:// <ip_address> /dev and turn it on. This is for Volumio, other builds will be different.

Further listening confirms that the Pi/SEG sounds much more 'analogue' with these settings, as suggested in one of the articles. I was listening to Loreena McKennitt earlier and I'm listening again to her voice, which is beautifully portrayed with a little reverb in a wide and deep soundstage. The first song has a massed choir, which some members may know is my ultimate test of digital nasties. It sounded sweet and like real people singing together. The overall sound is that of music. It could be LP or CD but it's neither. It doesn't matter and I'm getting back to listening now.

Is the tweak staying then or more testing ?

Mike, have you setup upsampling in the Volumio interface yet? That's a must-have. Try 24/96 Very High Quality in Playback Settings.

Maybe I did. Take a look in Playback Options and scroll down.
Going to have to get you to listen to the Pi underclock/undervolt settings, may be worth a quick visit sometime.

Was 24 /96 and High Have changed to Very High
Be good to have you fettle my little boxes further.
Would also love to see the easiest way to make YouTube play through Volumio and the Pi. Tried rebooting various. All off and back on,. Still no go
