Wow, thanks Jules...another one I hadn't heard of...
I'm delaying anything for 8 days as am just about to leave for Portugal in an hour or so. Better weather I hope!
Thanks again; I'll do the research.
R
Edit: That particular unit hasn't been made for 15 years. Good reviews.

Their current gear can sell for eye-watering prices ...
Have a great time in Portugal!

Thanks! A cruise along the Duoro beckons..
From LFD:"The MCT signature (retail £5000) is a phonostage dedicated to MC cartridges, you need a good MC cartridge/arm/turntable to justify the MCT signature cost. For the best MM cartridges i recommend a MMC modified with much larger PSU (approximately £2900 retail). For good MM cartridges and medium/high output MC cartridges i recommend the phono LE (se) phonostage at £1350 retail."

Just to add that some cheaper phono stages will lose the music in the means of doing the job properly. Cambridge for example seem to measure well, but I'm not convinced the music isn't chucked away in the process. If I say too much about NVA I'll be set upon as happened before, but you can send back for refund if the item isn't liked. The Rega Fono MC is a really good one in musical terms I feel from first hand experience recently, but it's MC only and not silly money either. Some cheaper phono stages are limited in their supply (wall wart) and some can have noise and hum issues too (I believe the Schiit Mani can be tetchy here).
I have to say I've never 'warmed' to LFD, finding the products as a whole rather cold, 'forensic' and uninvolving compared to other makes. Maybe I heard them in the wrong systems, but to get Harbeths to sound this way is going some ffs... What you've quoted above is absolute bullshine in my opinion. Five grand to reproduce an MC cartridge is utter madness unless you're a wealthy Hong Kong resident, where cost of the product and self esteem gained from the price tags rules over everything else I gather...
I'm avoiding SUT's as I suspect the best ones cost hundreds once cased up and marketed....
To conclude, all I can ask from a distance is whether you want clean 'cerebral' sonics only, or this combined with good music reproduction coming from your cartridge. Vinyl's fickle enough as it is, but it is possible to get a great compromise where the mechanics of playing the vinyl, effectively 'disappears' from the listening experience.

I've owned an LFD MC-1 for a lot of years. It's fit and forget for moving coils - no farting about with loading or anything. It's a great unit and yes, as Dave says, it can be cold and unforgiving, but that's because it needs two weeks to wake up after you plug it in. Leave in plugged in and switched on and it's superb all the time, every time.

Sorry Chris, two weeks to 'wake up' is to me not a good design - there's something not right there as was the case with old Naims..

For a low price, I think the little battery powered Angle Audio unit is superb. I used the mm version with fantastic results with the Decca mkiv cartridge. Tisbury 'Domino' is a good little Phono stage on a Budget, As is the matching Passive Pre amp.

Thanks Jules, the Trichord Dino seemed to be THE in-thing a few years ago, so I've always been on the look-out for a good 2nd hand version. There is one on AOS for sale now

Wonderful cruise along the beautiful and remote R.Duoro. Over-indulged in alcohol and food so am now paying the price! SAGA organised it so I was obviously the youngest there!

Sounds lovely - if you've got any nice countryside pics do share! I know they have some good wine over there ...

Update: I've bought the Dino2 with the improved Dino+ PS.
It's been running for about an hour. The immediate impression is a better bass slam but then the gain is more on the Dino than that of the Cambridge. I certainly won't be sending it back but I realise that the Cambridge offers very good VFM. Perhaps the Dino is a little 'muddled' in the mid-range? Now would the Dino 3 be even better...?
Thanks to everyone who has contributed.

Might be worth experimenting with loading? yep, will do so later. At present it's set to the recommended settings from The AT site. (Like you I have the AT33PTG). Thanks again, R
