The Johnny Cash version of Hurt, imo, tops them all though. If you realise that he's singing about June and the unfairness of love it really hits home. He adored that girl. It's one of the most deeply affecting songs I know and Cash nails it.

The Moody Blues - Nights In White SaTin
Heard it playing during the train scene in that remake movie of Dark Shadows and fell in love lol.
This one has vocals, I'm not sure what they mean but I get damn near choked up as my imagination reels thinking of someone I know.

On lyrics If you love lyrics for their own sake get into poetry. There is excellent work as well as stuff to leave you cold. For music I listen only to that to start with. If the lyrics are special they certainly improve the music. If not can hopefully be ignored I'll try to think of instrumental love songs now

Probably the best description of how I deal with lyrics. It's worth saying again that I love classical choral music, almost all of which is sung in Latin. My schoolboy Latin isn't up to it and I don't want to deal with highly religious verbiage. It's just not necessary to my enjoyment of the music.

A Song For You 1971
Written by Leon Russell, covered by literally hundreds of artists, but my favourite version is Donny Hathaway’s. Donny committed suicide aged 33 by jumping from a 15th floor window in New York. There is a story told by a musician who is a fan of Donny, that he played this over the phone to a woman (I forget his relationship to her) before jumping out the window. How true that is I don’t know, but who it came from for me, gives it credence. His daughter Lalah gives a powerful rendition too.
Ray Charles sings it beautifully too

Not sure a love song in the true sense of the word, but I love Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here.
