It's bonkers money, I'd like to think I wouldn't spend that even if I could - but each to their own.

I got the impression yesterday that Roon is a company in ascendancy and likely to render the competition also rans. I had a chat to Steve Silberman (previously Audioquest) who's the new VP of Sales & Marketing and he took time out to answer my questions, despite being surrounded by loads of trade who wanted a piece of him. Being married to Tidal I think is key, especially as Tidal is co-owned by artists. File playback and streaming was very prominent, in fact it was a two horse race with vinyl and file based from what I saw, hardly any one playing CDs. But I didn't see JRiver on any machines, which surprised me a little. Interesting times ahead if you enjoy the format

So artists get more from Tidal when we play their music, compared to Spotify? I like to know how this works as that would be a motivating factor for me to move to Tidal in the future I was being Ironic about wanting the DCS Tim!

I really don't think you need to spend £17k to get an outstanding DAC either.

I was being Ironic about wanting the DCS Tim! Haha, me too - and yes Martin, I was being a tad extreme Tidal is co-owned by Jack White, Jay-Z, Beyonce and a bunch of other artists John, so I'm firmly in your court of thinking, as I have a lot of respect for Jack White.

Has anyone tried using the Pi/DigiOne (PD) with Volumio as a DNLA renderer? Been reading it's possible, just wondered if anyone has done it and had any comments? Yes, thanks for asking. Previously, I used a modified hiface (by JKenny) usb to s/pdif converter powered by a 9 volt battery. The music software, Audirvana, took care of the file management, oversampling and Izotope file filters. With Audirvana, I was able to contour the sound to my system. When I was thinking about upgrading to the DigiOne (or microRendu) as a streamer, I knew that I could not give up my Audirvana customization. Then, Audirvana added a networking feature. Now, I use my Mac/Audirvana to select the music and customize the file (sample rate and filter parameters (pre-ring, steepness, etc...) then send this file over the network to the DigiOne Player which processes it as a native file without having to strain (and without adding much noise), sending it to the dac. Let me just say that this has been quite a sonic upgrade. Black background and better sound in almost every way. Just don't know how folk deal with not being able to play around with filter parameters...

Excellent, thanks rruffin, I would be doing a similar thing but with JRiver taking care of the file management and sampling. I was also considering either the SOtM or microRendu, but this would be a much more affordable option, as all I need is to send files over the network to the DigiOne and my DAC, just as you do. Good stuff and thanks again for the reply

Speaking as someone that can just about wire a mains plug, can anyone post a simple ‘How to’ guide to adding battery power, DC converters and ferrite cores to the RPi / Allo Digione. Please include links to where the gear comes from etc if possible. And what sort of 12v battery (and how long does it last, whats then needed to recharge it ?). i can’t see the Missus letting me bring the battery from the Beemer into the lounge . . . .

My wiring is not as elegant as Martin's but is functional Snap chokes are placed after the converter I spaced them out about every 1.5 inches My battery is 7ah That higher the number the longer it will last and the bigger the battery will be. I charge it about 2 times a week I listen to about 20 to 30 hours music a week on the DigiOne The lead from the DC converter goes straight too the DigiOne I am using this i am using this charger

4.2Ah 12V Yuasa lead-acid battery here. I charge mine on a timer, 1 hour every early morning when I'm not listening. It easily lasts a couple of long listening sessions driving the Pi via DC-DC converter and Caiman SEG directly.
I've linked to my DC-DC converter earlier.
