I've never heard j s Bach play. Nothing mentioned about having had to have heard 'em Pinkie. Out of that list JS Bach is the most important by a very long chalk.

Most of the musicians I respect I respect partly because they're still alive. Rick Wakeman certainly makes the cut. Keef's another.

Paul McCartney (although he should now gracefully retire from live performances!) This opinion is based on what?

Have you not heard him recently? His voice has gone. He was embarrassing at the Queen’s Jubilee.

He's getting on a bit, just in case you hadn't noticed. Singing is a very physical activity, so drop any ideas about is being easy - it isn't!
Sadly, his lack of formal training does let him down - he could do what Reg (Elton John) has done, and transpose it to voice friendly keys. That he doesn't is, I think, due to lack of knowledge in this area. He could easily pay someone to transpose the material for him, but the downside of this is that Macca would then have to learn how to play his tunes in those changed keys, which would be an immense amount of work on his part - it would be easier to spend the rest of his coffin dodging days just sat on his arse. He chooses to do what he enjoys - he certainly doesn't do it for the money any more.
Cut the old fella some slack.

I see what you’re saying, but I think he embarrasses himself every time he sings high pitched and it doesn’t do him or the audience any good. I doubt it’ll have much impact on his legacy, but in my opinion his live performance retirement is well overdue.

He should have everyone tune to E♭, but this would be a bit difficult to do with a piano.

As a musician - probably, but I reckon on my respect for musicians, as musicians, being on the basis of hearing them play. Straight musicianship, allegedly, would have WAM* way ahead of JS *Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

I can recognise an artists talent, but wouldn't you need to know them to have respect for them?

Nothing was way ahead of JSB work imho. His work, his compositions, are not his musicianship. Bach was reputed to be a pretty hot organist. But his ability to play the organ is not what you are discussing in appreciating his works - played by others. So a great composer. But you don't need to be a great musician necessarily to do that. My friend James Whitbourn would fall into that category. His works have nothing to do with his ability to play (although he is no slouch on a piano). So I greatly admire him as a composer. That's not the same as a musician

wouldn't you need to know them to have respect for them? I don't think so. I have huge respect for Richard Feynman and his achievements but I never knew him.
