OK guys, I can see none of you like rap music so now the time has come for me to extend your musical education. I am going to present 5 tunes to you from the golden era of rap, hip-hop and electro. I’m talking about the 1980’s and early 90’s when it was all still about the music and not the dollars you could make. More importantly, the music was much more inventive. It was much more sparse, as sampling hadn’t taken over at that time. You basically had the rapping, drum machines and turntable skills on the Technics. These tunes are all from my collection of 12” singles and albums from this era. Turn up loud and test out your bass drivers … 1. Hashim - Al Naafiysh (The Soul)I had to include one classic electro cut here and this is one of the very best from 1983. This is what 12” singles were made for and perfect for working on your b-boy dance moves. 2. LL Cool J - Rock the BellsCool J blasted onto the scene with the seminal album ‘Radio’ back in 1985. Nothing fancy here, just lyrics, beats and hard-core scratching. He had a long career before moving into acting. 3. Just-Ice - Cold Gettin' Dumb
Produced by wonderkid Mantronik, from the seminal lp ‘Back to the Old School’ in 1986. The drum machine programming is super cool. 4. EpMd- It’s my thingThese guys were one of the first to integrate sampling with hip-hop back in ’87. An awesome 12” single with the coolest bass line ever.
5. NWA - Straight Outta Compton
This is pretty much where gangsta rap started in 1988. The lp 'Straight Outta Compton’ is take no prisoners, brutal hip-hop from the streets of LA. It’s where hip-hop masterminds Ice Cube and Dr Dre started out. The production is phenomenally inventive from start to finish. As you can imagine, the moral majority in the US got rather excited about this album.

You posted two minutes after I did - that means you didn't actually listen to anything. You are only allowed to say LOL after listening!

Like most 'genres' that I say I dislike there are always some examples that I don't. I wouldn't give you twopence for the majority of dubstep, but I really enjoy Lindsey Stirling's work. If I'm in the right mood even Skrillex might get a play. I've heard more than several hip-hop and rap tracks that I've quite liked, or perhaps "appreciated" would be a better description as it's more the production value and arrangement that tends to hook me rather than the music(?) itself.
Generalisation is dangerous and leaves us close-minded and probably missing out on some great music. I got heavily into chillout, ambient chill, Buddha Lounge and Café del Mar (which I'm actually listening to now) stuff in the 90s/00s. It started in a record shop whose website I was building. Heard it, liked it. Had I heard the label(s) before the music I'd probably have dismissed it without listening.
The same, of course, is true in reverse. I love blues, but I don't necessarily like every blues song ever recorded.
Blues, by the way, is many things, it is NOT however Rag and bloody Bone Man. Good voice, yes. Blues artist NO! Sorry, but I had to say that, as a blues lover.
Keep your ears and your minds open. If you're prepared listen without too many preconceptions you can be continually amazed at your own expanding tastes. I still hate that classical so-called music that sounds like two blokes carrying trays of cutlery tripping over a dustbin and falling down a cast-iron staircase though.

The first and second are from my golden period of early hip-hop and electro... I loved early Public Enemy, but their polarisation of the genre pushed me off to pastures anew...

Nowt wrong with the Streetsounds Electro and Hip-Hop series... I still have most of them on cassette and for many in the UK, they were a great introduction to the genre... as was the Mike Allen Rap Show on Capital here in London. Tim Westwood came along later, but by then, gangsta rap had taken a firm foot hold and I took solace in the Orb and ambient house...

Not sure if this'll work Jules, but after a similar thread on another forum, I've been putting together a YouTube playlist featuring the early stuff I used to (and still) enjoy www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdrnHVAFk_54UHJRfLx-F5m67JNSrnlwP

I did listen to each of those, Jules, just to be able to say that I did. Not the entire length, mind, otherwise my inner brain would have pulled the self-destruct cord.
Absolutely horrible.

Excellent playlist! There's lot of stuff I have there but a few tracks I don't know ... No worries Jules... I'd imagine that the stuff you'd heard before could well be found on the Streetsounds releases. A couple of years ago before DJ Mike Allen passed away, I found some old tapes with tunes taped from the radio between 1984-87, and that is where many of the others would have come from.

I've got quite a few of them on 12" imports and some on my Streetsounds box set ... Mike Allen did a great show but I didn't hear it often as wasn't living in London back then. I listened religiously to a dj called Chad Jackson in Manchester and have got 20 tapes or so recorded off his shows. Back in the day I remember going to Wembley Arena to see a Streetsounds concert. It was plagued with technical glitches (like the decks not working!!) but was amazing seeing loads of stars from the US.
