My venerable Russ Andrews modded OPPO BDP 83 is shall we say unwell, nothing terminal I'm told by the engineer at OPPO, in fact a known problem. Consinering I've had it a few years and it wasn't new when I got it, it's not bad really. Whats happened is that the draw won't open, the display says opening, then without the drawer moving, (though you can hear the mechanism trying to work) it says closing, loading and finally, no disc. James at OPPO told me that there is a belt problem with the BDP 83, which as it's now 7-8 years old is pretty good anyway. The choice now is to buy the repair kit at £22.00 or send the unit back and get it repaired, serviced and have the firmware upgraded for parts plus £30.00. Bit of a no brainer really as I don't have time or a workbench at the minute. Sadly I just sold off a lot of my spare kit due to lack of space, though I can play CDs on the streamer (MAC Mini) I can't play SACDs or Blu-Ray audio, which I like. I never use this for movies I keep it just as an audio player with an LG playerf or the TV. On the bright side, I have the 3250 LPs, the 250 cassettes and the master tapes to be going on with Anyone else had a similar or any problem with OPPO players? I'd like to know wheter to stockpile the repair kits. Cheers

Never heard of them.. However it is the whole potential breakdown of Equipment with Laser disc reading, which is the driving force behind me using files as a play back source. I could never ever rely on the machines any more. Outboard Hard Drive failure is very rare but its just popping in the back up, make a new back up. No hold ups, dead cheap.

I have a file based system a Mac Mini hooked into a DAC I designed myself which has class a output and sounds good, but not I think as good as the OPPO. BTW I'm surprised you've not heard of OPPO they are pretty mainstream players these days. Check them out HERE

The Oppo is a nice player and you can get some very good sounds from it. I used to play music from USB stick from one.

Players fail occasionally. As I found recently, it's nearly always worth repairing them if you can get the parts.

Ah well i must be unlucky because ive have failed players a lot more than occasionally. Like i said earlier, if an outboard Hard drive fails & you have a back up its hardly a problem & swapping over is a matter of seconds.

It used to be that you could a CD player in the shopping trolley with the spuds.
No longer the case, of course, unless you want a Blu-ray player.

Sounds like an easy fix and hopefully a better sound after work

The OPPO is with them for a repair, service and upgrade, should be back before Christmas. In the mean time my son called me to say the he is selling his late mother's (my ex) house and he had found a load of my hifi kit hidden away (presumably so I would not get it when we split up almost 20 years ago). He asked me if I wanted it back and I got a Mission DAD5 with the matching DAC5 bitstream DAC. The DAC needs a new input socket, which I will do next week, but in the mean time I have plenty of other to use and it's direct out put is not bad either, so I'm covered for some silver discs til the BDP comes back. The one in the pic is not mine but I have the remote too and the battery compartment is clean, suggesting it was never used.

I bought the Mission 'DAD7000R' when it came out in the 80's. I also bought that 'DAD5'/'DAC5' Combo later on..

New Oppo 203's a bit tasty Paul? Picked one up recently and its brilliant at everything it does. Selling my previous Oppo, a 103 Darbee edition with Multiregion Bluray board if thats of any interest.

I like the 203, but my 83 has the Russ Andrews upgrades. It’s going back to OPPO to what the state of play is, I should know by Friday. Watch this space.

Just got the OPPO back and despite the fragile stickers all over it the twunt still dropped it about 10 inches onto the floor... However the 12 layers of sorbothane that James at OPPO Digital used in the packing saved the day. The tray is faultless and it sounds amazing on CD, SACD and Blu-Ray Audio. I’ll check out movies tomorrow.

Good news! I like my Pioneer BDP-LX55 which similarly plays all discs except 4K (and is multi-region A/B/1/2).

Old memories probably useless now regarding the DAD/DAC5 combo. We used to sell them on an Isoplat support as it's the right size and it 'presents' them well. Back then, I thought I could 'hear a difference' inserting the mains cable plug one way round and then the other. Using the Philips mains cables, I *thought* the tang on the fig-8 plug pointed downwards for *bet* sound. The sound was never nasty and may even still be quite good today. T'would be interesting to see how good or not it is nowadays - the Philips transport used to be a goodies I recall.
