I do wish you hadn't told me about how great the AT33PTG/II sounds on it ... Oh? Why not.

I'm running my AT-33PTG (not a Mk.II) for a while and the contrast with my Shelter 5000 is interesting. The AT is very capable all-round, fantastic detail and tonally neutral. Its balance is much better than the OC9, in my opinion. The Shelter has more welly and is more dynamic, makes you sit up and take notice and is a tiny bit less smooth at the top end.

That's kinda the same as I'm getting here except the ZYX is possibly too smooth at the top but definitely has the slam. The AT is an excellent cartridge and to think, I hadn't heard one until last week !!!

It's a quite superb cart IMO and I have no plans to change it whatsoever, I'm glad to say ...
At this point I must also pay tribute to my mrs - she more than tolerates my hi-fi indulgences as she understands what it genuinely means to me. She wouldn't kill me if a new arm turned up, especially from Angus, but I just don't like to overly take the piss in return ... Her interests don't cost so much money!

I think those of us who are married, are probably all owing a debt of gratitude to the other half lol.

After a day of nearly uninterrupted listen I can say I'm incredibly impressed with the AT33PTGII. It has to be one of the best bargains in cartridges. I did start to miss the dynamic sound of the ZYX so back on it went and straight away showed why it's the best cartridge anywhere for £600. What a joy it's been to have these two cartridges strapped to the phonomac AT1010 and SP10 MK2. Good times.

The reason the easiest cheapest route takes preference. I see this hobby as a mugs game. Upgrading is always an excuse.

I had a trip today to see Angus (phonomac) where I had the pleasure of a demo of an un-modded AT-1010 vs Angus's upgraded arm.
Test tracks were all from Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' on a recent 45rpm version.
We first tried the standard arm with an AT-33PTG/II which is the cart I'm using at the moment. Deck was an SP-10. It did well enough but there was just a slight edge to the midband that I didn't find so appealing.
Swapping to the modded arm and the same cart I immediately noticed a slightly fuller sound with more solidity to the image. Bass felt a little bit stronger as well. I felt that this set up did better once the music got more complex, it was able to cope better separating the instruments.
Then Angus added his new AT-ART7 to the equation. It certainly wasn't a night and day difference with the AT-33 which just goes to show what superb value the 33 is. The ART-7 is about 600 quid more expensive! As a whole, the ART-7 just sounds a little more sophisticated and refined to my ears.
Going back to the arm, the standard 1010 is quite a piece of engineering in its own right. So to improve it I think is a real achievement. I wish I could have stayed longer to appreciate its qualities so I hope to make a return visit soon!

Is now a god time to say my AT33PTG/II sounds superb on my Funk FXR arm?

That's the kind of fuckwitted review outcome we used to get in those days. They clearly found its sound quality good but the high price precluded recommendation? Yet the SME II at the time, which I know the sound of well, got loads of recommendations while sounding relatively poor. You can hear the bias (sorry) dripping out of their pages.
