That brings back memories Chris. When I was a student about 30 years ago I remember a group of us went to visit a friend who lived near Middlesbrough. His car of choice was a Ford Sierra Cosworth!! I couldn't quite believe a young guy had a car like that.

Interesting points Martin and I'm not being a dick here - but quite a few of the young lads in the North East have cars like these. The accident rate and fatalities are high. Lots of young guys, money from offshore or fishing, poor attitudes, poorly policed roads and driving well beyond their capabilities. Oh I agree, and it's cars like the Fiesta ST and VW Golf GTI that can be owned by utter cocks on the road. They are potentially very fast cars and shouldn't be driven by inexperienced young lads.

Having worked at a Citroen franchise for many years I got the impression that older Citroen cars fared no worse than those from other countries, including the UK.

The boy racer that always makes me laugh is the tricked out Saxo. Arhhhhhhhh yes Helmetology at its best Helmetology the study of HelllllllllMeeeeeeeeeeeets in various demographics, Boy racers, Kevin's (and Tracy's) from the Carlos Fandango's to the 385/25/20 tires on a 1.2 VW Polo a laccie band around an elephants leg. Those bonnet louvers and 8 foot arches and Thunderbird 2 tailpipes on a 850 Original mini. Nowadays the alternative therapy recreational substance entrepreneur runs his Bemmer with 22 inch uber low bone shakers (with or without spinners and enough tint to make a US actress look bleached. Got to love em, thinking of selling small car mounted EMP units forward and side firing (owners car shielded of coarse) so when the 'superior belle ends' try and impossible overtaking maneuver with 3.5mm of gap to spare between you and 45 tonne articulated lorry you just hit the button and watch as there pride and joy stops dead in the road, while you smugly go about your daily business unhindered by Helmets, must be a market of these surely

If only...
The Fiesta ST I encountered the other day would have been an ideal target and saved at least 10 drivers from being sequentially hounded on the M3.

The late 90s and early 2000s Mercedes Benz was worse but everyone I knew with a Citroen (Saxo, AX etc) suffered with pretty bad rot.

What about Peugeot then ? It's funny, only a couple of friends of mine had 205s and one was pristine, the other was left to rot. Only it didn't. He got back in after about 9 months and it started after a couple of hours charge. I appreciate 2 205s isn't a decent sample.

PSA own Citroen and Peugeot and I doubt they purchased their steel from different suppliers.
The Saxo was a thinly disguised Peugeot.

Change of production facilities and the type of paint used caused that I believe.

There is huge dissent among the Toyota enthusiast community about the new Supra. It's a joint partnership with BMW (theirs is the new Z4) and, while some like it, others brand it a BMW in disguise because of the BMW straight six engine and cabin appointment that is all BMW in feel. Opinions?

Not much of a disguise the back looks like a Toyota but spin it around and it's BMW

I think the roof line is quite Japanese but overall it's a bit of a mixed bag. I understand the engine is superb but a silky-smooth BMW engine instead of, say, the rorty Nissan engine may not feel quite the right thing. I would say Toyota could have used the Lexus V8 but that might not have fitted.

I think the Toyota/Subaru joint venture (my car) has much cleaner lines and looks all the better for it. It still has the recognisable Japanese roof line around the C pillar.

That's pretty much the cause of the controversy, Tony. Those who look only to the numbers see a sporty looking car with a 3.0l twin-scroll turbo straight six and salivate. Those who value Toyota's racing heritage and the old Supras look at it and think 'sacrilege'. It doesn't help that it's only available as an auto
