Aye Paul.
The Hun know a thing or three about putting a good car together!
I prefer my 330D M SPORT Touring to Irene's C Class AMG Coupe!
I've never tried an Audi.

Yeah my preference is.
Audi BMW Mercedes
The BMW are probably more a drivers car, although I do really like the Quattro Audi's.

Still working on my car on occasions, I decided to remove the air restrictor from the inlet pipe to the supercharger to improve boost at high revs. This has been very successful with a notable willingness to pull at overtaking speeds. Lots of work with a 50mm tank cutter, filing and swearing as I tried to refit the pipe with its o-ring at exactly the right alignment to pop back into place. And then there was the belt to replace, that was a story in itself. I blocked up the fifth injector hole (2nd photo) with metal putty as it's no longer needed now that I am tuning with four larger main injectors. The dishwasher is superb for degreasing car parts! It's just as much fun as modding hi-fi.

That's brave but looks fun. Do you have to put it all back together for commuting or do you have a plan B if it doesn't go as planned?

It's my daily commuter so work like this starts on a Saturday morning to give me the most time to fix it if it goes wrong. It's a Honda so it's basically very well screwed together.
I've learned a lot about tuning it now, using KTuner, and can re-scale the injectors to increase fuelling depending on the long term trim reading (the ECU measure of how offset the fuelling has become to keep the O2 correct in the closed loop). It's amazing how much smoother and more tractable you can make a car over factory stock if you're prepared to put some effort into it.

Looks like a lot of hard work to me, and in all likelihood I'd put it back together wrong and make things worse. I have never been mechanically minded, wish I was as it looks very interesting.

Yes mapping the 7 using on road data was a very good compared to rolling road sessions for driveability. It's a great thing to be able to do. Do you keep it within emissions regs at all times?

Yes I do, Steve. I removed the 2nd cat as being superfluous and detrimental to performance but I left the primary in place as that is important to emissions and is part of the O2 loop so would cause an engine code if removed. Many Americans remove it, too, and override it in the ECU. The car runs so optimally and is so fuel efficient that there should be no problem, and the O2 reading is spot on.
The funny thing is, Hybrids are not emissions tested in the MOT so they won't even measure it anyway!

I plan to remove the swirl flaps in my E46 diesel tonight. It should only take a couple of hours. The advantage of doing it at the moment is that I have two other cars available if something goes wrong.

I plan to remove the swirl flaps in my E46 diesel tonight. Good move, apparently swirl flap failure is a big cause of engine write-offs.

Yep. Job done in three hours. I also had to replace some of the vacuum lines, as old age was definitely showing through. Some silicon vacuum hose has gone on in place of the rubber stuff.
The car drives fine, and no fault codes showing at the end of the test drive.

That looks like some real out-of-the-box thinking by the Mazda engineers.
