Anyone have any experience of 4K BDPs? I specced the telly and the AV amp to be both 3D and 4K compatible some time ago but thought it was about time I let the BDP join the game as more and more 4K discs are becoming available. I've ordered an LG UP970 (current BDP is LG, as is the telly) which has a fairly minimal feature set but seems to score highly on picture quality which all I'm really interested in. I'm not bothered that it isn't DLNA'd up the wazoo etc. as long as it plays discs as well and as seamlessly as possible. The UP970 does offer both HDR10 and the new(ish) Dolby Vision formats, which could be a plus in the long-run.
Speaking as someone who is very happy with the picture quality I already have, how big a leap forward should I expect? Am I about to be astounded? Will I even notice? Enquiring minds want to know.

Very interested myself as I've just bought an OPPO UDP205 for the audio at the moment as I haven't got a UHD TV .

That's the size TV we're after. I'm not planning on swapping out our Pioneer Blu-ray player, though. I'd rather get Sky Q first. In any case, I have region 1 DVDs and region A Blu-rays which need a multi-region player.

In the true spirit of hifi forums I will comment on kit I haven't used!
With a big screen I think you will be well placed to make the most of 4k Paul. But I don't think the difference will be mind-blowing, unless the film you are watching was captured in 4k in the first place. And as ever depends on the individual transfer of a given film. It should be considerably better than any 4k streaming service though.
Does your TV support HDR? The combination of an HDR TV and a 4k bluray should give the best available picture available today.

Yes, it's described as an Ultra-HD 4K TV and it has an H.264 Codec for 4K/30p and an HEVC Codec that handles up to 4K/60p Needless to say it's a discontinued version now but when I bought it the idea was to be as "future-proof" as possible. When I bought the current BDP five years ago commercial 4K didn't exist a.f.a.i.k. I'll be using the new BDP as " shock horror" a BDP rather than an entertainment hub type thingy. I don't have, or want, Netflix etc. There's a Yamaha RX-V373 currently handling the 5:1 sound duties.

I'm only buying a 4K TV.
Going to re-use a Caiman-II DAC, Sony amp, Wharfedale Diamond speakers and a REL sub. As you probably know by now, I wouldn't give surround sound the time of day.

Really, I thought you were up for a big chunk of Dolby Atmos, Martin. ...and that's without front and rear "presence" speakers, and only a single sub.

I've had an LG OLED 65E6V screen and Panasonic DMP-UB900 4K player for a year now.
I don't watch a lot of DVD's these days and I've only got three 4K discs, Mad Max, Ghostbusters (new version with women) and Goodfellas.
The picture quality on the 4K discs, especially the Ghostbusters movie, is stunning!
I didn't have any Blue Ray DVD's until last year when I inherited hundreds of my late brother's.
I thought that I may as well get a BR player and took the opportunity to update my 11 year old Pioneer 50" plasma at the same time.
Most viewing is done off air and from the built-in apps (NOWTV, Netflix, Amazon Prime) with audio plumbed through my Meridian Audio G65 processor/HD621 HDMI switcher and into Meridian Audio DSP 5200's, DSP5200HC and Velodyne DD15 sub.
4K material is absolutely stunning to watch from these apps and upscaling of standard DVD's is particularly worthwhile as well!

I got a couple of pairs of 3D glasses with the LG OLED TV and thought that this would just be a gimmick!
I looked amongst my late brother's Blue Ray disc collection and discovered a few in 3D. I watched "Piranha 3D" and Kelly Brook has some outstanding assets!!!!!

Okay! So no Kelly Brook fans out there!!!!
Netflix seem to have had a binge-buying session of Star Trek series, with whole season sets of Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise and a new one, Star Trek: Discovery!
I watched the first three episodes last night and was pleased to see the "DOLBY VISION" logo appear momentarily on the top corner of my LG OLED 65E6V.
There are a couple of well known names, James Frain plays Vulcan elder Sarek and the ships captain is Jason Isaacs.
It is set in 2225 and nothing has been heard of the Klingons for 100 years, until a science vessel, unwittingly tangles with them and plunges the Federation into another war with the newly-allied 24 Houses of the Klingons.
Isaacs and his crew on Discovery, a brand new warship, are out to discover (pardon the pun) a new means of biologic fusion propulsion to power Federation star ships and win the war against the Klingon Empire.
Picture quality and sound on Dolby Vision is awesome!
