Yesterday, I attended, by invitation, a barbecue and Absolute Sounds demo at my dealer, Studio AV, Chobham, Surrey.
I was also able to get invites for MikeMusic and his stepson, Dan.
We enjoyed some good food and drink, coupled with a few hours of listening to the Magico S7 speaker system (£75K) being driven by a Dartzeel pre/power amp combo (£65K), with a dCS Vivaldi full stack (£75K) as the front end. Ancillaries included Entreq equipment racks and grounding boxes, Stillpoints Ultra footers and Tellurium Q cabling.
A second, smaller system, was on demonstration in another dem lounge, consisting of Magico S1 speakers, Vitus amplification and sources from dCS Rossini and a Melco N1A digital music library.
Riccardo and Pedro from Absolute Sounds were in attendance and music was pretty much anything, if you had brought your own, or via Riccardo's extensive catalogue of CD rips.
I took a CDR rip of Kraftwerk's Minimum-Maximum for reference purposes and picked up a good few music buying examples from the session (already ordered off Amazon - Ry Cooder, Gare du Nord, Cassandra Wilson, Sting and a few others!).
I was totally familiar with the source components, but this was my first opportunity to listen to Dartzeel amplification and Magico speakers in a relaxed listening session in a home environment (both demo rooms are an extension of Jim, the owner of Studio AV, large, luxury modern home).
Volume was adjusted to the listener's taste and attendees were pretty much left to get on with listening, without any "sales" interruption from Riccardo or Studio AV staff.
Compared to the normal Absolute Sounds, ticket only demos at various Hi Fi shows I have attended, it was an entertaining afternoon with an opportunity to seriously listen to some top-tier kit in a relaxed setting.
It was reassuring to chat with Riccardo and get his take on the present stage of the art in audio and the fact that he rates dCS as the number one digital source in the world, even beyond the beautiful Kalista Metronome CD transport that often features at AS demos.
His preference is also for Magico (over Wilson) in the home, but when I pressed him, he admitted that he would be prepared to pay serious money to get hold of a pair of Apogee Scintilla's in A1 condition!
I certainly enjoyed listening to the Magic S7, which has a very relaxed diamond coated beryllium tweeter.
Would I seriously consider buying a pair?
No, but the slightly smaller S5 is a prospect at half the purchase price of the S7.
Did it make me dissatisfied with the sound of my own system?
No. If I'm honest, accommodating large 140kg loudspeakers in a domestic setting is a no no for me these days. The thought of moving them around (now i'm getting older) fills me with dread! I believe that a satisfying sound can be had from smaller speakers, possibly augmented by the RIGHT subwoofer(s) is my preference.
I definitely think these sort of dealer/distributor sponsored events are the way to go, with numbers restricted and a more relaxed atmosphere than the hustle bustle of large shows.
Well done and thank you to Studio AV and Absolute Sounds for yesterday's event, even though they probably won't take any/many orders for the uber-expensive kit on demo.

Thanks for the write-up, Steve. It's interesting to compare with my experiences of both Magico and Wilson speakers with different electronics and in different environments. My feelings on Magico, based on what I've heard, are not positive. Every time I have heard them they have sounded faultless in any hi-fi terminology sense, but completely lacking in musical emotion. Wilson, on the other hand, have always impressed me with their superb attributes and ability to make musical connections. Perhaps it's not surprising that I find them, in their characteristics, much closer to my Ushers?

Martin,
I was surprised how open and honest Riccardo was! He obviously has a long association with Wilson speakers, with Magico a relative newcomer to his stable of products.
He also mentioned Sonus Faber as the choice for people who enjoy a "coloured" sound!
There were no more than six people at any one time listening to the big system, with two leather recliners for the critical listeners.
Mike and Dan chose to stand behind the chairs most of the time, although they did sit and listen to some favourite pieces. Mike even played ELO!
It would be interesting to hear his take on the sound if he chips in to this thread.
I would describe the Magico S7 sound as large-scale, very detailed, but relaxed in presentation. The base went deep and the rest of the range was easy on the ear.
Riccardo placed a cigarette on end on top of the cabinets at high volume to demonstrate how inert the cabinet structure was.
I heard a new term from him as he struggled to master the controls on the dCS gear. "I need an Audio Butler. I'm just the ears of Absolute Sounds. I leave it to others to master the equipment!"

Good write up Steve.
I have heard Magico speakers a couple of times at different shows, and kinda agree with Martin's point, but would add I found them very bland and unexciting. Wilson have always been far more entertaining and emotionally involving.
Both are well out of my price range though!

My thoughts so far An unusual event for me, walking from home to a dealer working from (extended) home I didn't know existed until recently. Should have taken my favourite test CDs. Didn't as I thought they would have hundreds or have infinite file based so had to rely on CDs I knew quite well but not played for many upgrades on my system. As we walked there no one saw my car so we were allowed in. "No hoi polloi" was inferred but still we went in ! Had lunch already so not bothered about the barbie or drinks. Being almost vegan and almost tee total I wasn't fussed anyway. Into the dem room with the smaller speakers. A few seconds told me there was no need to listen to them. A thinner sounding version of the Auram Montans I guessed Big room: The speakers are *big*, grey and not pretty. The pictures show them better than real life. The kit serving the speakers big and multi box. Lots of silver or gold or wood colouring. Too big for most people's rooms. The speakers would have to sound superb to get over the look of them. First thoughts on music I had not heard before. At best something wrong/missing, especially in the mid range. At worst it was lacking maybe even broken. Rough cuts from Steve Stills, Dave Crosby and Graham Nash. Interesting to add to your collection, not essential unless you are a big CSN(Y) fan. Steve's Kraftwerk CD gave me something I knew slightly. Live album I may have heard once or twice so not so worried that also seemed incomplete in presentation. Kraftwerk ok for me. I have a few of their albums with Man Machine scoring 7/10. Others rang from 4/10 up. Female vocal, including Harriet who sounded a bit like Karen Carpenter. None of this telling me much about the sound. With others playing music I didn't know I went looking for music I knew quite well in the collection, to have a sense of what was going on ELO - Out of the blue - sounded ok. Ry Cooder - Paris Texas - First couple of tracks, moody acoustic guitar, nice sound. Sting - Brand new day. Track 1 sounded nice and bassy as expected, track 10 also superb and sounded good. Leftfield - Leftism. Sounded ok but rather different to what I know (knew, see my kit blog later). Overall this is not a system for me. Seeing Steve's post showing prices and adding on what I guess the accessories cost we must be looking at a price somewhere North of £300,000, more than most houses. For that I'd expect my socks and other parts of clothing to be blown off. They weren't. It didn't seem to improve on my system which is a tiny fraction of that cost. In contrast, a few years back I had the shock and horror when visiting Martin for the first time in Basingstoke, hearing how much better his system was compared to mine. I was staggered my lovely Linn/Naim system was so far out of it. We have both upgraded significantly since then and moved the goalposts much further up the field. Back to mine. While the audio memory was still there I put on the same albums ELO - Out of the blue - sounded ok. much as round the corner. Hmm. What's going on there then ? This is not an album that had that good a manufacturing process. Ry Cooder - Paris Texas - First couple of tracks again. Better I think, That mid range and detail came out. More space in the playing, detail. Sting - Brand new day. Track 1 and 10. A step definite up. More clarity in that mid range. More together, more complete. Nicer to listen to . Leftfield - Leftism. Sounded different again to what I know, slightly better than around the corner I think. I'm in two minds as to whether I should go back this week with Mavis, L'Arpeggiata, Ry Cooder and Pilote to have another listen. Will I learn or is this academic.....

Always a learning process, Mike, even if you don't like it. Take advantage, it's not every day you listen to £300k+ systems. I've heard very few indeed that sounded anything like their worth.

Revisiting the price of the system on demonstration, even with cabling, Entreq boxes and equipment stands and Stillpoints added, would come out around £250K.

Does that include the mains blocks, cables, interconnects, various Stillpoints supports and dampers ?
Bearing in mind the price of the kit I assumed very high prices for the above

In terms of outrageously good scale and sheer music making, I have never heard better than the Infinity IRS V speaker system that I heard once a long time ago. Damn, that was a good sounding system. In more recent times, the Wilson Alexandria speakers have done it for me (but not the looks).
Those are the few among many demos of 'high end' systems that have left me cold. I have yet to hear Magicos sound good and Sonus Fabers are too warm for my tastes. Like Mike, I go back home and listen to my own system with relief.

Steve
I would suggest a change of amplification from CJ pair you have to really bring out the best in the CR-1 you acquired last year.
Recently heard the new two box Vitus pre amp @ £45K along with a whole entreq /still points system costing a touch more very smooth, sweet, sweet sound no edges and you really couldn't point a finger at doing anything wrong at all, it just didn't involve you. Hifi in a very pure form.
Having owned a pair of Rev 5 towers I would suggest they do the Martin T Big Banger scale like few others plus a sight to behold!
Not a fan of Magico's however if you have the space and the understanding of how and what Magico does the Q7 can be made to sound good, but very few amplifiers really gel well with them very much like the Focal Grand Utopia III a real so in so to dial in, but get it right and they can sound fabulous (just don't use naim!)

Bearing in mind the price of the kit I assumed very high prices for the above Mike, £215K for the speakers, preamp, power amp and dCS Vivaldi full stack. £35K for the ancillaries, such as Entreq boxes, cables, equipment stands, Stillpoints etc.

The wonderful thing about hi fi is that it's all about choice.
Each and every dealer and distributor I have ever talked to has claimed that their choice of products are the best available and absolutely "destroy" the competition!
They can't all be right, can they?

Thinking back... Going was an interesting experience. Returning would not give me any benefits I can see.
Improving my system or helping others achieve a better sound is good. Hearing systems that don't make it is time I'd rather spend on other things. Currently investigating Glastonbury on iPlayer, BBC
