Clever little keyboard that can make the sound of any instrument. Has to be seen to be believed
The Gadget show has a few minutes of it near the beginning

Looks to me like an instrument you can make music on.
Can see many musicians having that with them at all times to make toons

I can't see that it does anything that couldn't be achieved with a great deal more flexibilty using a USB keyboard (A proper black and white keyboard, with velocity sensitive, and in some cases semi-weighted, keys) a laptop and the software of your choice. There's a lot of great software out there which is (legally) available for free and the keyboards (search Google for "25 key midi controller full size keys") can be picked up for much less the price of the ROLI and often come with cut-down but perfectly usable versions of professional recording software such as Ableton Live, my personal weapon of choice. That's why, to me at least, it's no more than an expensive toy. Serious musicians would (again, only my opinion) require a lot more than the ROLI can provide, and don't forget that although the basic unit is priced at £279.95 there are more than several add-ons for you to buy. Their version of the 25 key midi controller for instance (still using silicone keys though) is £599.95. ROLI Rise 25 - £599.95 or the M-Audio Oxygen 25 - £79.00 I know where my money would go.

I probably feel the same way about things like this as you guys do about expensive bling-covered boxes being passed off as hi-fi.

So why the big thing on the Gadget Show .... ? Is this some sort of product placement, maybe paid for. Hmm

So why the big thing on the Gadget Show .... ? Is this some sort of product placement, maybe paid for. Hmm It's typical Gadget Show fodder these days I think. I used to love the show but they went more and more "up market" in their reviews and eventually the price of their main review kit was way out of my league, and was mostly stuff I wouldn't want to own any way. In the "old days" at least it was presented a bit like Top Gear for gadge. It was fun, or as The Grauniad once put it, sometimes an excuse for Jason Bradbury's mid-life crisis. Quad bikes and £1200+ coffee machines don't float my boat I'm afraid.

Got it. It's like so many programmers nowadays. 10-15 minutes of programme stretched to an hour. Keeps me slightly up to date
