Thanks for the photos, Chris, it has given a great feeling for the show. I regret now not having made the time to come up.
I've always had a soft spot for Tommy Horning's speakers. How did these ones sound (I don't recognise the model)?

Unfortunately, there was a bit of a change over going on as I arrived and I had to push on. The only thing I actually heard was a record being played at the wrong speed!

Unfortunately, there was a bit of a change over going on as I arrived and I had to push on. The only thing I actually heard was a record being played at the wrong speed! That can be an interesting exercise sometimes! I know of many people posting up about playing 45rpm albums at 33rpm, particularly Boards Of Canada. The interesting one I read about, was Dolly Parton's Jolene played slower - it sounded like moody guy singing, which sort of suited the track! I think it's on YouTube if anyone wants to find it.

Great pics Chris, some peculiar looking speakers in that lot.

David, where do you get the tapes to feed your Studer from?

Blank or loaded with music?

There are many companies now selling reel to reel master tapes, indeed I sell some! The Studer will wipe the floor with any turntable sound quality wise, regardless of price.

Presumably they are low generation copies rather than master tapes? How do they compare with a hi-res release?

Presumably they are low generation copies rather than master tapes? How do they compare with a hi-res release? Dude they are master tapes copied under license, its a minefield as to what they actually are as some of the sellers own the license to the music such as Chasing The Dragon. The tapes being sold are in a different league to hi-res stuff as long as one has a top flight machine to play them on, its as simple as that. I have waited 9 months for my Studer to be re-engineered by the owner of Gamut Electronics, its one of only 2 in the world. Sound quality, well you need to hear it for yourself, its breathtaking. As I said R2R sounds better than any turntable and hi-res, sorry but there is no comparison. Not cheap, £250-£600 per title, some would say insane but others would say the best costs. An interesting article here by a friend of mine on this subject.
