Rick Wakeman is on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs right now, if that's your cuppa tea. No matter whether you like his music or not, he's the source of some of the most hilarious tales of rock ever to be told: should be good.

I've just started reading his "Grumpy Old Rock Star (and Other Wondrous Stories)" book, and I've got "Further Adventures..." to read after that. As you say, he's got a huge fund of hilarious stories but even rarer than that he has the ability to tell them well.

I like about 50% of his music, some of it a lot. Certainly like listening to him talk. Thanks I'll listen
<part way through>
Great. Recommended.

For me, early Wakeman was excellent, from involvement with Yes into his early concept albums, especially '6 wives..'. I saw him play live once and the performance was amazing. He really did play several keyboards at the same time. Sadly, he veered towards 'New Age' and that's when my interest waned as much of it sounded to me merely a shadow of what he was capable.

Wives and Arthur are particularly magnificent albums. We enjoyed the Anderson-Wakeman gig we attended a couple of years ago and his storytelling was as good as ever. He really engages the audience well.

SaveI've seen those 1p hardbacks on Amazon, but being a suspicious soul I've assumed there is a catch somewhere or else how on earth can they sell for 1p ? Maybe the £2.80 delivery charge carries enough markup for them to make a small profit ? Anyhow if you guys reckon they're OK I might have a go at some..

Zippy, it's also worth finding low-priced used books that are sold via Amazon itself. You only need a £10.00 total order to get free delivery. That can make a huge saving too.

A big company pays way less than the individual punter. We pay Vat on postage, they effectively don't. There's 20% saved for a start. My guess is they pay post and package for about a quid so doing quite well

I like Wakeman he entertains , read his books when they came out . He used to do a Planet Rock show Saturday mornings which was excellent , also does anybody remember the C4 TV show he did with Ian Gillan where they interviewed guests who later played a few tunes ?

Do you mean Gas Tank, the one he did with Tony Ashton. I remember it fondly, and it's in my "want list" at Amazon
Rick also did an interview series called "Face to Face" for a strange little channel (I forget the name, but it was actually something like "Planet Rock") that I found on my Freesat box years ago. You can find some of those episodes on YouTube, and they're well worth watching, especially if you're a fan of Rick's interview...err...can we call it "technique" do you think? Tony Iommi, Jon Lord, Ian Anderson, Bruce Welch and many more.

The interview with Tony Iommi is great. I'll watch the rest in good time.

I really enjoyed the one with Dave Cousins , of course Rick played with Strawbs , I think they did The Hangman and The Papist .

I finally ordered "Gas Tank" yesterday, it had dropped to £11.49 and there are still copies available at Amazon if anyone's interested.
Here's the full blurb...
